Thats not such a bad thing Getafix. It means that in 6 months time and they have decided to move onto their new fashionable sport these multi thousand pound bikes will be on ebay... for usually less than half price.

Seems to have rack mounts, is 8 speed, and has a CARBON belt drive.....

To be honest, I think that disc brakes are a bit unnecessary on the majority of bikes. The cable discs are crap so steer well clear, and the stopping power of a well set up hydraulic brake is truelly awesome. The stopping power of a poorly set up hydraulic brake is crap!

For an every day bike V-brakes are absolutely fine. They are much cheaper and easier to live with. Pads can be bought for a few quid, and you only need a spanner. My hydraulic disc pads cost nearer £20, and you have the hassle of bleeding the brakes etc which isn't an easy job (plus you need a bleed kit etc so it all adds up).

I wouldnt exchange the Juicy 5 discs on my Marin for anything as there have been many occasions where they've stopped me from stacking into tree's, rocks etc, but they are a pain in the ar$e for maintenance!

And regarding the Marin vs Giant debate... I have a Marin and my brother has a Giant so you know where I stand!

The main discs argument is off road, rims get the mud and crap first..

Also worth checking the ATB sales website , they do have ex demo, ex
salesman samples sometimes. (ATB and Surf Sales used to be the same
company)

Jeez Tim, what are you using that cost that much for avids? We're running the superstars pads http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=21& ;products_id=29 and they stop just fine. May not last quite as long as the OEM pads but at £20 for a pack of 4 its much, much better value. Weve not had any bothers with ours.

Other reason for disc brakes on MTB's is if the rim goes out of true, having a disc brake wont affect stopping too much, whereas a rim brake could be affected.

The first few sets I bought were the genuine ones at £15.99 a pair, I recently bought some Clarkes from All Terrain Cycles for £5.68 a pair and they seem to be pretty good actually.

That's a good point about the rims actually. My rims are looking a bit tired but the discs are straight so they still work fine at the mo. My old bike with cantilevers wouldnt accept new pads on the back as it was so buckled I couldn't fit the new pads in!

I've previously owned a few mountain bikes (and used them properly!), and more recently an old Graham Weigh roadbike.  These days I'm looking to use a bike for going to work and back, some fitness thrashing, and to go out to play with the kids, which may involve mud, sand and water (I hope!).

I reckon the new 2010 Giant Roam range fits the bill for me.... the £650 one is a fantastic looking bike, but I may not be able to sneak the price tag past Dragon Ops, so the lesser £350 version may be making it's way the Chez Bootscooter this winter

So, right, if it's raining and pitch black, and I scream "lights" at you because you're a t*t riding along an essentially unlit cycle route without any, dressed in dark, non-reflective clothing so I only saw you at the last minute (luckily as I'm slowing for the stupidly J-shaped corner), then telling me to "go forth and multiply" will result in me calling you a procreating idiot. This is only natural. What I won't do, right, is stop, and turn back, when you've stopped and are inviting me back to come and say it to your face. This is because it's cold and dark, and I've got a policy of not getting involved in physical violence with knuckle dragging idiots. I just don't like that you're selfish enough to put me and others in danger because you're too cheap to spend £30 on a half-way acceptable set of lights. I don't care if you get run down by a lorry that doesn't see you, frankly you endanger me more than the various "professional" drivers* that cut me up every morning or the people passing me at 60 round blind corners with their wing mirrors almost clipping my handlebars.

(note: this rant is AFTER several hours cooling off and a couple of calming beers)
