Dinghy hull weights

The wild card is the Blaze which I do fancy even though I'm a bit light but does it overlap the Spice a bit much?

   Although trying a design before you buy it is obviously good advice I'm not sure I really subscribe to the idea. We live in an age were buying and selling something dinghys is comparatively easy and you never get to really know a boat until you live with it. If Id tried my canoe or Musto before I bought them I would have just thought they were hard work and would thus have missed out on some great sailing, sailing that you can only experience after having spent some time in the boat.

	I'm hoping a trial sail will tell me if I'm in the ball park. I nearly bought a Laser a couple of years ago and a trial sail reminded me why I sold the last one and took up windsurfing..... If the Europe boom is simply too low for my ageing back I'll know pretty quickly, likewise if the Aero is a flighty beast then that's not for me either. I bought my Spice nine years ago based on advice and a gut feeling and have loved every minute of it (still do) so I do have some parameters for the second boat. I will be a unarig singlehander, no trapeze and such that a 75kg sailor is at the top end of the weight range. FRP (not wood) and no heavier than a L@ser to manhandle on shore, decent controllable rig (no soft, sleeve luff sails, I grew out of them in my Div 1 days). Carbon sticks would be nice but not essential and I have a leaning towards unstayed but that's not set in stone. And moderately forgiving to sail (which rules out RS300 for example), particularly in a blow, I'm good in light airs so something I can get round in when it's windy would be nice. I reckon that leaves me with :- Europe, Aero/D-Zero, Lightning 368 and Solution. I'm nearer the bottom of the weight range for the Supernova and all the used Streakers I've seen are wood so they're out. 	Returning to the topic, I've just spoken to White Formula re Spice hull weight and the quoted 85kg is bare hull moulding only. Added to that are a couple of space frames and a full fit out and you're probably up to 100kg without the rig and foils so mine's not looking too bad after all (but not the super light baby I'd hope for......). 	well you have to admit there are some similarities, Accpted the Blaze has no kite but both are slightly de-tuned skiff type hulls with fairly big rigs and some kind of hiking assistance, both designed by Ian Howlett and John Caig in the mid/late '90s from I14 DNA........ I like the idea that the Blaze is a singlehanded version of the Spice/ISO/Boss/Buzz line, I'm just trying to decide if that's what I need or if I should buy an 'ezy-sail' singlehander like the others on the list..... 	Not that I'm saying you should do as I would. I think I'm about your size and age. I also have sub 950PY two person but single string spinnaker boat. Probably sail on a bigger pond but if I hadn't got the Contender I would go for a Streaker or Blaze with Fire rig.

	Don't use the 'skiff' word in relation to the Blaze family whatever you do - you will have of few of 'them' all frothing at the mouth on this forum... It is the standard reaction for some .... Seriously if you are uncertain or unsure go for something a tad more mainstream as a first step into single-handers..... supernova / streaker would be a good direction. 	I have some experience of SH boats Mike, OKs as a teenager and a laser for a few years before I got into windsurfing but you're right, my gut feeling is something not too radical if I'm to keep the Spice (which is definitely 'Plan A'). Streaker and Supernova are obviously good boats but I still feel I'm a bit light for the 'nova and FRP Streakers are few and far between so I'm back at Europe or Blaze or spending real money on an Aero/D-Zero or Solution.

	Im sure its been mentioned already - but try before you buy - Get in contact with the class associations and organise a sail in all the boats your tempted by - might require a bit of travelling, but worth it in the long run.

	Good advice. I'm currently trying to trace the owner of an abandoned Blaze and waiting for the opportunity to sail the Europe that is for sale at my sailing club.
