You were a Rear Commodore at 1? And you could talk enough to tell people! What a precocious young child you were, Rupert.

Smile

When I was in that post at the sailing club, I could tell people... Now I'm not one (a rear com sailing, that is, rather than my age) so I can't...

I know we all like to think of sailing as special, in some way superior to other sports but the sad fact is it isn't. Sailing now has to compete with a myriad of other sports. To the general public the use and preservation of these old elitist traditions comes across as pompous, arrogant and as I said earlier, slightly kinky.

I reckon Club Manager, Sailing Manager, Boat House Manager would suffice.

They're are only titles but they do project an image which in turn creates perceptions.

We're quite fortunate really, our club is quite relaxed about these things, a club very much like GRFs I suspect. We currently have a female "Club Manager" Smile and a reputation for being child friendly, although the fact that being  "child friendly" is remarkable is a sad indictment of the sport in general.................. Oh and another thing which some might find quite shocking, we encourage Cats. rant, rant , rant. Now I'm off again. Partisan attitudes!!!!! Aaaaaargh. Please be more tolerant folks.

.....more work to do.

I don't see why you have to destroy tradition to have the correct attitude.

I belong to an old club that has good traditions and also has addressed all the issues you highlight.

We have had a female commodore (x2) and have a female club managers and young adults and children are a full and active part of the club.

Not all clubs have the culture you describe.

You are entirely correct. That's the problem with institutionalised attitudes. some clubs can be held up as glowing examples of progression......Then the cry of "it aint so" goes up.

The US middle classes in general have a tendency to obesity. Some US folk don't......but the rest of the world still has it's perceptions......image, image image. It's all important if you want to be attractive.

Come the new revolution, when the productive people of the world rise up and slaughter the new executive class due to their greed in appropriating the majority of business income to themselves away from both workers and owners, then only traditional organisations will survive. Anything smacking of management speak and corporate bullsh*t will join the executives on the lamp posts...

Dear Jim,

I sincerely respect you knowledge of all the techy stuff, rules, history etc. You know way more than me on that front. keep up the good work.

With regards to the issues I have raised. In my experience (which is clearly different to yours) taking the piss without reasoned argument when presented with contrary views is usually a sign of someone trying to defend the indefensible. The problem personified.

I seriously don't want to offend you but unless you are responding to a techy question please don't ever reply to me again, I'll do likewise......Nothing too personal you understand.

Our club tends to exist in a climate of not exactly taking anything too seriously, so we never really minded the tags, seeing one of our own as "rear commodore windsurfing' was always taken with a pinch of salt and more than it's fair share of piss taking.

So personally I don't mind that, I mind all the other bollox, the insistence of buoyancy aids (something we should debate at some time in the future) the necessity for bureaucracy, notices of race for open meetings, the sometimes snotty attitude witnessed last time I visited those stuck up t**sers over in Thanet, the over complication of the rules and timing out races when folk travel miles to compete (easy way to lose a sponsor as well). Sailing and it's attitude has shot itself in the foot that many times over I lose count, but I genuinely think at our level, the writing is on the wall and if they don't adapt to societies changing attitudes, they'll go the same way everything does that fails to spot what's going on.
