Because normally the folks here just struggle to recollect from dim distant memories rather than looking it up. Anyway where is the fun in dealing with the truth?

When Matt Biggs last used the tape drive sails to win... or not win the Tiger Trophy, it was seen as an absolute outrage. The witch hunt that followed the event featured many sailors who voiced their disgust and opinions in such a forceful way that the action of this made Matt Biggs feel like he had no choice but to retire.
My question is that simple. Why was it was a big issue and problem back then but not now. The same basic outline of broken rules stands, with insult to injury posed by banks/speeds who tried the same thing for the second time! |

Are you certain that the Fireball class rules don't permit the tape drive sails?

It's a good question Tony, I guess because attitudes have possibly mellowed somewhat, or in truth, ambivalence towards the whole thing has kicked in.
The events 'vibe' probably did need to chill out a bit- it's only a handicap regatta and handicap racing doesn't matter- not unless you're some noddy class without a proper circuit on offer that is. I personally haven't bothered with any of them this year as frankly it seemed to me folks were taking them far too seriously. Maybe the 'whatever' feedback to the Fireball's (alleged) infraction is a good sign that the worm has turned? Although it would churlish not to acknowledge that must stick in the craw for those lads in the Merlin... times and attitudes change, such is life. I would counter that by saying 55 sailing team's manager (presumably someone from Sailboat's marketing team?) could have probably been a little more diplomatic, given the hullabaloo of past mistakes under the Speed brand- assuming of course this isn't another wing tip on a 420, and tapes are perfectly class compliant. Whatever, no need to slap individual sailors down though... all power to them for getting free sails from Banks's to trash over the winter. Not sure what the ROI is for the new Speed brand owner though... everyone knows if you want a 'proper' Estaugh-inspired sail, there's a only one place you can really get one these days.

Well for me it still could be a big issue. I'm still sitting on the fence until we are sure that the sails were out of class and the race committee was not notified.
If both of those are true I think we are on the slippery slope to the point where anything goes. Nearly all of my racing is handicap racing and part of the relaxed nature comes from the fact that you feel that no-one is trying it on to gain unfair advantage(whether real or not). Coming clean with the race officer beforehand removes any suspicion of ill intent and I would happily go along with the RO judgment. Knowingly being out of class and not declaring it is an attempt to cheat in my book. Let see if the facts make this situation the case or not. |

So, how does entering a race and declaring your boat is out -of - class work ? Do you compete in the race, obeying and enforcing the race rules, finish and retire ?? I'd be pretty pi$$ed off being pushed over the start, luffed, conceding water, on the wrong side of a port / starboard call just for my 'competitor' to finish & retire after trashing my race. If classes want to trial new kit, I can understand testing it boat on boat and within their own class racing events where their committees give dispensation with the agreement of their association & members that for a while one or two boats will be out of class for the potential greater good of the class in the longer term. But if you are going to enter a mixed fleet event that is taken seriously, then your boat should be class legal 100% with no grey areas. Otherwise we'll see asymmetric kites on N12s. |

I agree with the last two posts, and I don't think there has been a change from last year to this in terms whether people believe the rules should be adhered to.
Maybe people have toned down their forum posts this year as compared with last because of the upset caused last year and because the facts are still not known this year, but that is different to collectively shrugging our shoulders, saying "oh well it doesn't really matter" and giving up on getting a fair race. |

Yep. The Merlin Sails were known to be out of class before the event and had been declared so by a class measurer. I'm not in a position to comment on measurement of Fireball sails, but if they were clearly and deliberately not constructed in accordance with the class rules and not declared then the competitor should retire. |

Why should the competitor be allowed to race if out-of-class sails were declared ? |
