today i had a brilliant few races in the 600. first race i got a perfect start and held it all the way round pretty much to finnish first. 2nd race the start wasn't quite as good but it was still nice, just second round the top mark, then it all went a bit wrong. i was 5th at the bottom mark but i came back through the fleet to finnish 2nd. In the last race for today i was leading at the top mark after a windier beat than before. i had a mental reach down the spreader leg, the sea was uip and i was enjoying the waves and gusts, as i bore away down the run i went in a bit to windward and then as i started to come back up my QRH disengaged itself and i was left unable to finnish. the hook suink and i haven't been able to find a replacement. luckilly a mate has leant me his harness for tommorow. SHould be another good day tommorow. 2 other boats didn't finnish that race. one very unluckilly lost a shroud at the same mark i went in on, another snapped his tiller. The spreader mark was absolute carnage, there were at least 4 boats over at it i think.

well i have been at sunderland for an rs300 event, saturday was absolutely crazy with steep, tightly packed BIG waves and force 6-7 winds. lots of wipe outs eventually ending up with whoever held the boat upright the longest between capsizes/ pitchpoles on the way downwind winning. races 4,5 and 6 on the sunday were tough with big waves but more space between them and strong winds (force 5-6). very close racing and very physically demanding. hopefully pics to follow. and im now off to bed |

well today i was the only one to put the chicken rig up, some of the others were making a few jokes about that before the first race, but by about 2/3 of the way through i was glad i had the small rig on upwind, and from then on it just got windier. The first race i got to the top mark 1st, then got rolled on the reach becasue i didn't have as much sail as the rest of the guys, then i binned it in on the gybe. Still i came back upwind and managed to get to 4th at the end of the race. Then in the second race i had another good 1st beat but got stuffed a bit but not quite as much off the wind. Then i binned it in on the gybe AGAIN and a batten poked through the sail (going to the sail makers tommorow). I got some ground back upwind untill at the top mark i went to let off the kicker and the splice of my continuous rope decided it had had enough and went bang. (i would like to poiint out i did not do this splice, it came with the boat) so i got another DNF and a DNS today. I did manage to finnish 4th overall in the open though. scoreline 1, 2, DNF, 4, DNF, DNS. If i could stop stuff breaking i might win something some day. |

Medway Sunday Close racing in a steady f4 on Sunday. Good racing in the morning but we were always playing catch-up because we'd missed the start. We caught the rather well sailed Vortex on the line when he pitch-poled. The afternoon was better until I sailed into a mudbank at high speed. Crew was brilliant at getting the kite down but it didn't save us from a swim. Medway Monday Wilsonian South Kent Race - basically down to the Thames and back - that's about 20 miles. We set off in about a f4 and it gradually built to 5 and it was rough down in the very open waters at the turning mark. The 59er dropped in on probably their first gybe, same too the 29er. The 5000 dropped back when they fluffed a gybe and ended on a lee shore. The 800 was about a mile ahead when we then dropped in for a swim by being a bit tentative. Meanwhile the Contender wasn't that far behind given all the fast asymmetric blasting. After a 10 minute blast with the main ragging and all our weight on the kite we reached the South Kent Bouy. A bit trecherous because of the chop - we were hard pressed to hold high but bashing off the waves made for a rough bucking bronco type of ride. By this time the 800 was gone and we seemd not to have anybody behind and so assumed retirements by the others. We had certainly seen boats from the slower handicap fleets in a mess. It was a beat all the way back and it took a while to settle down. In other words it was difficult to get forward and get enough downhaul and kicker on whilst also dumping and then sheeting the main in the gusty, choppy conditions. We did it though without disaster and then noticed the Contender behind and gaining. He got past in the roughest part of the course and then we got back ahead of him but the trend was set and he gradually pulled away over the next hour and finished with a lead of a couple hundred metres. Meanwhile further back we noticed the 29er but the water was flat compared to earlier and we could really get the boat planing to windward which held him back and also demolished a V3000 we came across from another fleet. We arrived back at the club with the wind whistling in the rigging and completely knackered and surprised not to see the 59er and the 5000 in the dinghy park - clearly they were still out there. Much to our relief they appeared at the line whilst we were downing a beer - so no breakages then. Later we found we'd come 2nd to the Contender and so had beaten the 800 on handicap. We felt good and although it was pretty frightening out there we agreed you can't talk about it unless you do it.

We had a very enjoyable first visit to Burnham Week weekend - 11 Ospreys, tidal waters, a decent amount of wind, excellent hospitality - but the launching arrangements were the most challenging aspect of the weekend! Luckily many hands were there to help and all went well.

last weekend i borrowed parents cruiser and went to the isle of wight for the sailing clubs anual piss up in the folly inn. on the way back on sunday we decided to put the cruising chute up, with about 20 knots of true wind, we had 3 17 year old boys on board, it had to be done. this probably wasnt a good idea. but it was fun sailing along with 1 slab in the main and the kite, mildly overpowered. when we came to drop it, i went to get the tack back into the cockpit but when i untied the tack line the sheet was not completely dumped and the chute started lifting me off the deck, so i let the tackline go, you can't let go of a line under that sort of load quick enough. about 2m of 3 strand went straight out through my hand and took most of the skin off my forefinger, left a huge blister on my middle finger, and lots of little burns on the other two. i think ill be more careful next time. Just got to hope it gets better quickly so i can sail ASAP Edited by mike ellis |
