Our Harbour is closed by government edict. Wearing a commercial hat, I have received a communication from the Harbour Office which indicates that there may be some loosening up on water access for commercial operations, in which case they are advising preparation of detailed risk assessments outlining how we might mitigate against COVID 19 risks. The sample that they have supplied, which is their own risk assessment document, is extremely detailed.
I suspect that this is what coastal sailing clubs or other water sports clubs will have to do in order to access the water in due course. Which makes sense, though to many the methods of mitigation may be quite obvious. My personal opinion is that it might be easiest at the beginning of any opening up, to sail my single hander “not under the club banner” alongside mates who can be safety buddies, in favourable conditions and if we want some racing, then do rabbit starts. I suspect that this will not be for a month or so.

I - along with most on this forum- have a well maintained boat and a reasonable idea of my limits and skills. I am happy that I could free sail when and if allowed in the future . But once free sailing is given the OK it gives the ok to all, including those which are likely to need rescue cover.
It is not possible to run safety cover without a risk of cross infection and those people then going off to pass the virus to others. Until a vaccine and controlling medicines are available dinghy sailing is going to be difficult to run and justify. |

Lot of club residents on their lake, local authority who own our lake insist on RYA recommendations.

I wonder what insurances are in place for clubs who elect to reduce/remove safety cover? I guess it's case by case. Extending your point about some returning to sailing before others, the obvious category which may suffer is childrens and youth sailing, if safety cover needs compromising.

Maybe the inland clubs are better placed - although my club's lake is shallow ( capsize & the mast sticks in the mud), we could mitigate this with masthead floats.
If there's a boat problem, it's possible to walk back to the club, then have a power boat collect the dinghy - small single/handed. For a person rescue, power boat tows a SUP or windsurfer behind at the end of a 2 m line. The real problem would be dealing with a serious casualty - one who needs urgent assistance and needs physical aid to be rescued. |

The penultimate sentence is the problem. I've said it a couple of times now that I think that some of us will be able to use the water and our boats at some clubs before others. I cannot see how you can run anything besides loose club racing with minimal/no safety cover in single handers with social distancing in place.

If we didn't have different perspectives the world would be a boring place much like this place most of the time.
If you live long enough, you get to experience a whole gamut of perspectives. It is true, my thinking might tend to be left field, conspiratorial, alternative, call it what you like and certainly it's not there to be agreed with, quite the contrary. However it doesn't deserve moronic bullsh*t, if you can't come back sensibly, like the key protagonists here, who are at least intelligent, obviously with actual medical experience and educational, personally I'd rather you try the dettol experiment, believe in your uncle Donald and Archbishop Grenon, consider it a gift from God and cut me a break ffs. |

Yep - you’re right. I’m off to look at his website to see what he can sell me right now. He’s got a different perspective from you. Simples. We’re all shaped by our experience. Simples. |
