I often wonder what happened to that gorgeous Aura hull after the show and trials.

Skiff sailing is always going to be somewhat niche due to the available places to sail and crew skills needed. The reason the 800 still gets decent fleets is because they maximise the potential pool of sailors with a really good weight equalisation.
The 900 is no doubt a better boat, but the 800 is better solution to enable fleet racing in the UK. I think they made the right choice... but I would still love to have a go on a 900!

IIRC, it was because they didn't want to butcher the RS800 market. Crew weight for the 900 was assumed at 120ish kgs and they didn't want to dilute the pool of sailors that would sail RS800's. Although a shame as it looked like a beautiful boat, I think it was probably a good decision as one bigger class with a wide weight range would be more successful long term.

Yet another example of the Olympic Tail wagging the grassroots market dog.

RS were very clear it was a concept boat for the trials only - and yes, it was by far superior to look at compared to everything else that ponied up... except maybe the rebel, that was a sweet looking ride.
But hey, they chose to ‘shrink it and pink it’ to the 49er, and the sailors seemed happy, so wtf, do our opinions matter 😂 |

When I saw it, it was out pacing the 49er upwind.
Seemed better proportioned than the 49erFX in terms of boat size to crew size. Plus it had better integration of wings than the 49er, with controls in the middle which makes more sense. I think the hull form was more 'sail-able' than the 49er too, basically a shorter 800. |

Had to go look that one up on Google images too - I missed a decade or so having kids and the RS thing exploded over that time so I feel like lots happened and only some of it is still around to be seen!!

Yeah guess your right. Funny you mention Ent and Fireball as "established classes"....I was more thinking RS200 and RS400 when I said that which I guess are the modern Ent and Fireball. Made me smile anyway

D-Zero is plodding along OK for a new boat.... still one of the few I'd actually consider buying when the time's right.

D -Zero? Don't seem to hear much from them these days as a boat with huge promise it seems to have been steam rollered by the RS machine in much the same way the Solution has been sidelined, both really good boats.
