Ah....presumably "community sport" is what gave us money for electricity and central heating then. Very good, it made us much more comfy in our dotage. We will therefore live longer and make it unnecessary to recruit new younger members. Result!

MRSC got a nice new club house with input from "community sport". At least IIRC that's what it says on the plaque by the door.

So, this bloke turns up. Middle aged, six foot two, shiny shoes and nice car. He wants to learn to sail, very keen. Just the jobby, polite and middle class. We want to help of course (if only for the first round he buys in gratitude). What do we stick him in for the ole' training? Oppy? bugger off. Topper? He'l sink it, Laser? bit of an arseole' for a learner? Thinks...there is no training boat for well fed professionals...only for spotty kids.
Looking through a cupboard at the club. What do I find? A big pile of beer mats with stupid boat pictures on them relics of 'push the boat out'....you know like the birthday card auntie Maureen sent when you passed your RYA one. Inappropriate, inaccurate and stupid. Anyway kids don't drink that much beer and who the frig uses 'coasters' at home? What does all this mean to me? (in my slightly inebriated state, nice evening with friends,) The RYA are dumbing the 'sport' down with all this splashy washy, jumpy wumpy, saily waily stuff. There are lots of formerly red blooded males out there whose red blood has been diluted by relationships and children but who want to cast off their respectability, stick a foot in a toestrap and plane into the distance. Another thing. My very good mate got into sailing as therapy after a broken relationship. It occurred to us that a quick add in Match. com might swell our numbers. |

In an obscure, artistic, slightly alcohol fueled, way I was trying to point out that the emphasis on training children, them being 'the future'? may be misguided.

Stick him in a doublehander with a teacher, teach him how to sail. Pretty simple, really. Thousands doing it. It is what comes after that that matters.

Of course you are right Rupert and that is what we will do. My argument is about the emphasis on children at the expense of adults. I think we should broadcast AC/DC out over the water on training days.

I'd kind of agree that there is a bias towards families at our club - they join so both parents and kids can take part in a social, healthy outdoor activity, and we as a club are happy to cater for them by running junior sessions and adult RYA courses. Some come and go, others stay and become part of the furniture. Current Commodore, Vice Commodore and Rear Com Sailing were all members of families joining for the above reasons, though there was some sailing experience in each family, at least partly as children, years ago.
