Russ if I worked on your ratios, If my legs were the right length I'd be 6ft 4".

I'm 6ft 2" with 33" legs.

And to get back vaguely on topic, I've never had a problem getting under a Laser boom or indeed an OK boom.

Well Paul, I am 5'9 which is average height in the UK for a male, the average leg length is 32". So if you add 3" to my height it would have me out at 6'.  It causes me some issues with clothes and bikes.  My mountain bike is 18" and road bike is 52.  I can however ride up to 56 cm road bikes comfortably, although the seat to bar drop is too shallow for me and the bike looks stupid!

Don't worry chaps, as long as your legs reach the ground you should be OK.

Yeah, but mine are so short that they don't reach the ground. Ducks Disease is a terrible affliction.  Cry

When I had one of my Solos I borrowed a mates OK: I loved the Solo because it worked on handicap in every condition, but purely as a sailing experience in the steady F4 I sailed it in, the OK was a much nicer boat to sail, it was more powerful, more steady and just felt nicer. Sadly it did not work on handicap and I just don't get that, so maybe GRF is right sometimes? I cannot see why a handicap system can work apparently perfectly for the solo but makes the OK unappealing for club racing when to my mind it was a nicer boat!

Because you've fallen in to the trap of taking handicap racing too seriously- a criticism I could levy at myself in the past too. If you have a better sail in an OK than a Solo then you are winning! (And FWIW, just look at them side by side - of course an OK would be a nicer boat for a proper adult sized person...)

Could it be that OKs in the UK are a relatively small bunch of high-class sailors, whereas the Solo fleet is much larger and includes many more sailors of average ability?

Nothing like having some slow boats in your fleet to drag the PN no. up, witness the Wayfarer fleet, who have seen their PY go up from 1099, where it was for years, to the current 1112, despite in the meantime getting slot gaskets and an almost completely new open meeting fleet of a Morrison-optimised hulls with a wider o/a beam and larger kite to boot?

It really is a pity that it is not possible to extract data from the returns such that the PN would reflect the potential of the boat rather than the average sailor's performance.

I still find myself taking it too seriously, especially when the rudder is wrapped around with weed and a Topper has just overtaken me. Easy to forget at that point that the reason you are out sailing is enjoyment, and only a small part of that enjoyment is winning. At that point, you really, really need to be sailing a boat that you find is the bees knees, the love of your life etc, etc!
