Getting on the water and enjoying the feeling of being pushed around by the wind is either in your DNA or it isn't.  I've only been unhappy once in adult life, and that was stuck in London without any sailing I could easily access- I couldn't afford a boat (other 'joint' choices were prioritised) and couldn't afford the time to commit to crewing for someone else as had always been the plan immediately post uni (dreaming of an RS400, first crewing and then buying one, got me through my finals!)

It's quite funny how technically better sailors, or certainly racers than me, were quite happy to swap their sailing for any number of more accessible, or time friendly sports- kite surfing, snowboarding, office football, squash, even Golf...

I still don't get as much time to sail as I'd like and I've never owned that RS400- I guess it doesn't help wanting some variety from it through windsurfing and family sailing, not just club racing in the same boat, but I think you're right, it takes quite a bit of dedication as it's an equipment and time heavy recreation.

Apparently sailing clubs (and golf clubs) can be a very intimidating environment if you happen to come from an ethnic minority. Is that due to poshness, ignorance or lack of education? It's a great shame really - I've been made to feel very welcome at sailing clubs around the world.

to be fair, they've only met your windsurf forum friends and I believe half the night was spent moaning about board prices and the rest about the mental one.

If they'd have had the good fortune to meet Ruscoe then their opinions would be somewhat different, although  he'd have ruined it for them with other men, so maybe it's good you don't introduce them to him.

Technically my Mrs is from a POSH family, quite literally, the Colonel dated back to the RAJ and the Central India Light Horse, so they would have been Port Out Starboard Home and they were always black tie for the Christmas dinner we were allowed to attend.

She still exhibits certain traits that have washed off on the Girls (not much sadly has stuck to me)but not one of them includes any desire to have anything to do with sailing dinghies. Or the and I quote 'morons' who mess about in them and certainly not 'your forum friends who are as retarded as you'.

So I think you can can any POSH aspirations folks, that's official from the top.

Didn't the Duke of Edinburugh sail Dragons with Uffa Fox? I seem to remember that. Charles II started it all though with a spot of leisure sailing, slowed down some what by obligatory cannon. I don't remember that however.

Lord and Lady Muck hang out at Whitefriars.

Used to race against Richard Stanley years ago at Draycote Water in the Lark Fleet. He is a Right Honourable (his older brother a Viscount I believe). One of the nicest people I've met - even brought his own asparagus to a barbeque.

Since we are so far off topic anyway, Edwina lives near here these days and in this area she counts as a big celebrity. Drop her a curtsy and she'll open your curtains. Oh yes, that girl who ran of with Lineker came from Furness Vale.
