I am hoping to buy a Cherub soon...but for the weeks my helm is busy working, I need a single-hander so I'm not stuck on shore! Only weighing 60kg there isn't a great deal apart from things like the radial, which i absolutely h8 with a passion! (sorry all laser sailors! So I have now heard from one of my kestrel crew friends that she sails a Supernova...which the Kestrel boatbuilder now buillds also. Does anyone have any experience of this boat? Is it a sod on windy gybes like the Solo? would i be too light? whats the circuit like? Any suggestions would be really appreciated! Kasey |

60kg is a good weight for a Europe, which is a lovely responsive boat. A while back there were a lot of keen sellers after it was dropped from the Olympics; I suspect they can still be found cheap.

I've sailed the Europe and didn't get on with the low boom It was a little slow for my liking as well, cos I used to beat it on the water in my Solo.... Thanks for the suggestion though! kasey |

You learn to duck, and to let the kicker off before tacks and gybes. I'm not the most flexible person around and I managed it. Performance is pretty similar to a Solo.

I used to sail at the same club as Mark Giles, the designer of the
supernova and they outnumbered lasers there. To be honest I dont
remember much about how they performed in diferent conditions and ive
never sailed one but they certainly seemed to be a well sorted boat.
Personaly Id recomend you go for a europe, but you probibly wouldnt regret the supernova even though id say you would be a bit light for it. Theres also the Lightning, another of marks creations... not the sleakest looking boat about but great for lightweights and probibly quite cheap second hand as the class never really seemed to take off having said all that, you say you are moving into a cherub... have you considered its singlehanded cousin, the moth? Probibly not a good idea if you dont have the time to commit to learning to sail it but you would be perfect weight and I can blab on about how much fun they are for hours.... |

Thanks Isis! I have sailed the Europe and Lightning...not liking either I have considered the Moth a great deal...it is still a possibility, but not sure if my lake is big enough as it's only 75acres and I'm still in two minds about moving to Grafham! I really did like the moth and have been told b4 i'm a good weight for the boat I know I said I didnt like the boat....but the radial is now back in the list(mainly cos if I did the circuit they have a v.good turnout).... so it's kinda between the nova, moth and radial now! I don't normally have such a difficulty in making my mind up!!! ahhhhhh..... |

I agree with you about the europe actualy... without olymic suport I
cant see it surviving long, shame as Ive always quite liked them.
As for the other boats: I cant say much more on the Supernova but I sold my Radial a few months back and got a Moth... Never going back to plastic again now, they are in totaly different leagues. |

It's more a question of how steady the wind is rather than the size of the lake - if it's reasonably Where do you sail now - somewhere near Grafham from your earlier comment? If you want to talk cheers Tim |

Your far too light for the Supernova, on good authourity from the REAL diesigner, a very good friend of mine who gives me loads of support. (Frank Purnanik) Europe is a genius boat (close relative of moths), but for restricted water you can't over look a British Moth. At Stanborough I regularly see them beat Supernovas over the water. And don't think that's because it's a slug in the 'nova'. Thats with Chris Clarke helming! But then it is Tim hogan in the Moth. So probably equal crew skills, and the Moth still wins. |

Thanks Tim!!! That would be excellent if I could pop down down to Grafham and have a go! I currently sail at Lakeside SC, Peterborough...but a few of us at Lakeside are considering moving to Grafham or Rutland next year. Lakeside is generally shifty all year round as it's surrounded by trees and is slightly dug down so the wind comes straight of the hills around it...kinda interesting when it's blowing F7 in the winter I'll pop onto the Moth's yahoo discussion board and give you a shout! Thanks, Kasey |
