Knee pads, they've never really done the job up until now, they slip down, you still have bruised knees at the end of the day and generally they aint kewell either...

Well here's the news, I've solved it for y'all.

Forget dinghy brands.

A Mountain bike brand called Kali (declare financial interest here we distribute them) make what they call soft shell pads, that you can pedal in, but compared to most dinghy pads I've tried, they are hard shell.

They're obviously weather proof, made with neoprene, and are so so comfortable by comparison. The jolly old EPS delivers a fair bit of knee action, least it does the way I sail it right up front, kneeling in the middle, it seems to go faster off wind like that and it has been bruising the knees a bit despite my old Musto Pads, which even over a wetsuit still don't really cushion against the shock of kneeling on say a bit of warp.

But today that all changed.

Kneel where you like when you like, on whatever you like, you feel nothing but comfy cushioning, designed to take the shocks of downhill MTB action, I'm not even sure how they stack up price wise, I shall take a look after this, but hell, saving knee pain is worth it..

First lot that came from a google search

Forty Four quid, that's not bad.

Edit: Hmm probably twice what you pay for the crap offerings from traditional sailing brands, but that's what you get when you trade down too parsimoniously, if you only pay peanuts, you get what monkeys make.

Still they're your knees are they worth another twenty quid?

And purrlease don't come on telling me how great this or that piece of junk is, they're not.

And you look such a dick wearing them OK?

I find it's not my knees so much as my shins. Does anyone wear shin pads?

I had a good look at Hilarys Streaker for the first time down the lake yesterday and she showed me the 'new' Rooster version that someone else has bought, even she had to admit that she was perplexed that someone would recommend it as a boat for me. 'Nowhere near exciting enough was her comment.'

Then she went out and beat me in it  Confused along with just about everyone else on handicap..

I use these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004B75EBI/ref=asc_df_B004B75EBI8608387?smid=A336WL40UR49AK&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B004B75EBI

Designed for mountain biking, they are streets ahead of any of the sailing specific ones.  My knees are shot from 20 years of playing Ice Hockey - these enabled me to carry on sailing!
