Just seen on N12 website that Grafham SC are making quite a few adjustments to advertised PYs for this event. Checked out their website and indeed some potential gains and losses noted. Interesting to see how it pads out on the day............

Don't think I'll bother then 1026 for a Blaze!!! They are off their trolley - I was never going to be competitive, but a level playing field, a realistic playing field, and some good old common sense would be good. Those figures are bonkers!!

Is it that wrong? only a 20 point drop 1 minute in an hour (Ish)  its still saying the blaze is slower then a 300 and a Phantom!  So whilst you may feel its unfair, its certainly not bonkers!

What worries me is the amount of moaning about the stagnant nature of the PY system and how its too slow to change and when the clubs that arguably run the best handicap series in the country actually do something about it and change the numbers, they get responses like that!

I say well done Sail Juice and Grafham for having the balls to make your own considered changes around the PY systems.  I will be there!

.... and Icon is 'rated' or is that really 'assessed' at 990 Confused.  I suppose they have to hobble new classes like us (we don't have the 'marketing clout' to 'impose' our own assessment  ;-)  But please can we have an explanation as to the sailjuice methodology applied to those with more established and widely proven handicaps.

I would hope the identical method applied is the same for all classes and numerically based .... so lets know a bit more about the criteria / formula used.

Nothing wrong in my book with alterations ... if 'needed'  .... except where it is not consistent for all classes or where the method is not objective or publicaly explained / open for all to appreciate.  What many would presumably like to know is exactly what 'considerations' are in play !  Give us the spreadsheets and formulas .. or point us in the right direction if already available !!

I don't think this is an unreasonable request of organisers that do want people to attend .... Am I alone in this ?

There was a whole thread about this a month or so back:

Nope, I've done very little to suggest 990 would be right (must be you Mike, I told you to slow down!)- but I do fully support big movements to PYs where needed as the official numbers seem to lag a long way behind for some classes, esp development and 'updated' classes.

It's probably Mike in the Blaze, that has also caused our hideous handicap. Do we blame cracking sailors like Mike for our handicaps being cut. I, like Mike L, would like an explanation.... I have no experience of a Blaze doing well (or winning) at Grafham GP...

Jon

Edited, for quoting wrong poster.... (Sorry)

Mike/Peaky,

The numbers have been calculated by Andrew Craig from Queen Mary. They are compiled from results from all of the clubs in the Sailwave series - Queen Mary, Rutland, Grafham, Northampton and Draycote. I'll point him in the direction of this thread to see if he can answer your queries more directly. Interestingly the numbers were not too dissimilar to numbers that Starcross had calculated for their own Steamer event, so they have asked to use the same numbers too I believe.

As a 300 sailor considering going to GGP, what worries me more than any of the handicap adjusments is that the 300's (and contenders to some extent) have been lumped in with spinnaker boats in the medium handicap fleet rather than the rest of the singlehanders, all because of less than 8 point difference to the PN cut off bands.

Not the GGP admittedly but these results were sent for inclusion in the Sailjuice PN calculations:

4 blazes in the top 14, and only 3 phantoms..... Ok so it didnt win but a Blaze came 2nd overall and it wasn't Mike L!

'See Y & Y last month. The Sailjuice events are using a yardstick based on a "Class Champion" assessment on open inland water. The normal PY is supposed to be based on fleet average performance on all waters'

Quote from post responding to the question of handicaps for the series taken from the 12 forum.
