Put my new boat in the boat park at the weekend. It has a carbon mast. It now lives under a Pylon. When I was putting the mast up, and indeed when it was rigged, I got some monster shocks from the mast. Not only did it shock me many times it was making an crackerling sound?!

I know there is a field given off by Pylons but this seemed much more intense than I would have expected.

Also does anyone think this could affect my mast!

Wait a bit. This article is to do with salt water effects only, not electric fields. . The discussion is quite a buzz actually...

thanks 'slop'... that link seemed to be talking about salt water fatigue on carbon epoxy laminates. Was there another paper you were thinking of?

apologies for that i skimmed the article in my haste, but you mast will be covered in salt water so it could apply.  its a starting point anyhow.  i would be keen to move my boat away from the pylon.....just in case

edit: Jack, pm salty about what happend to a friends musto skiff mast when it struck a power line.....

Thanks... I must admit I think I will ask to move my boat. Trouble is most of the dinghy park is under the plyons.

I imagine 'salty' friends mast went BANG!!!!!!! and l hope his friend didn't go bang too!

I just thought... my space is on top of, what look like two cesspit metal vent pipes. Presumably going down into a tank (metal?) The tie down points are metal chains in concrete and I'm only 60 feet from the pylon base. Could there be a circuit of sorts being set up here?

Sounds like arcing to me....did you know elastictrickery can jump???

http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/electric-shocks/1871 .html

Whatever the hell it is, surely it warrants a dinghy berth move / elastictrickery company investigation....jeesh

Wear wellies!
