Just expanding this concept a little further; How about having a 'non excludeable' duty race? If you don't do a duty (in the series) you have at least one non excludable DNS. If you do, do a duty you get a mutually agreed score which you may or may not use. Would that work? |

Agree Jim, but by giving everyone the option of a duty in exchange for a 'non excludable' 1st place means that no-one will ever disadvantage their series score (for the majority it would be an advantage). By not doing a duty you could be disadvantaging yourself. There is therefore a positive incentive to do a duty (unless you think you can get straight 1st's anyway!). |

But, assuming everyone in the series does a duty, all that does is have the same effect as giving everyone one more discard... |

We give a 1st place, this makes it a lot more appealing to do your duty, you are only allowed one per series though. Works really well, and because you only get a duty on your second season it makes it appealing to stay for more than one year!

The Summer series runs from early May through to Late September. Racing is on Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The Tuesdays are split into early and late sesaon while the Sundays run throughout. The Sunday racing isn't as well supported as the Tuesday eve because many of us travel about at the weekends. We are a very Laser dominated club and the Irish Laser Association has a very busy schedule. Keelboats don't race on Sundays as they compete at the Royal Ulster on Saturday. We use the same rescue crews throughout the season but run a Race Office team of 4 (RO, Assistant, Timekeeper, Flags) for each day's racing. A team of 4 means that we can still race if only 3 turn up. |

this may not work for everyone and as far as i know no one does this on a regular basis, but what if the you have class duty days. that way you dont have to count average results, as everyone is in the same position. we do it for our club week with each class having a duty day. it may be impractical for some club classes due to size - too large and people don t do anything or too small and you may have to merge classes for tat duty day. yes people will miss a days sailing every so often but at least the duties will be shared out amongst all of the racers and not just the few whole actually volunteer their time. |

At Kielder a duty earns you a 3rd place in the race - but you can only count a duty result for one race in a series - usually about 7 races per series, 4 to count. That sounds pretty generous but usually we do only one duty per season so it does not appear to skew the results and is a welcome boost to the back of the fleeters.

Yeah it seems fair and fine nearly all of the time, so I have not really got a problem with it. Just more curious as to what everyone else is doing. Just out of interest how long are your series? I do not see how carefull planning to make sure you only miss one is possible without huge effort form somebody??!! and then what if that one becomes a DNC that you have to count, ssems better to offer an average score to me. |

We use the same system as you. DNCs do not contribute to
your "duty" average points. I think that's fair. If someone turns up for their duty then they would otherwise race. So they should receive their average "racing score". The prize at the end of the season is for the best sailor, not the one who turned up most. As long as the number of discards is not too large then it is unlikely that a "flash-in-the pan" will win it. |
