A personal question ladies & gents. Anyone else get this? After doing the Sunday morning blast around the cans - especially if it's a bit tough, I notice that I often get a real hum dinger of a headache later on in the day .  Now, I do drink what I would consider plenty of water - I take some with me sailing (500ml) which I guzzle down & have a - usually soft - drink in the bar after... Maybe this is not enough. But, I can almost regularly rely on getting a headache! Oh... I do find that I get preety hot & sweaty whilst working hard on the boat - RS Vareo - (That's another thing - you pay extra for so called breathable spray tops that are def not!)

So, do I need to drink more water? What do you guys do? FYI : I consider myself a fairly fit late 40's fellow, of slim build...

I think that the amount of water you are drinking should be okay, provided that you are not dehydrated to start with (think a half gallon of the landlords finest the night before)

Other causes

  • Sun on head overheating brain - hat
  • Looking up into the sun (or bright light) when trimming sails - sun glasses
  • Glare off the water - sun glasses
  • Hitting head on boom - duck a bit lower or drop a bit of kicker off (I think you may have been able to figure this one out though )

I think the sun probably has a big part to play here.  I now try and wear sunglasses at all times when on the water to prevent glare and me constantly squinting.  That could have an impact??

I think we all make the mistake of thinking that we are in the UK and therefore no that exposed to the effects of sun, but I think we all get pretty exposed when we are out there for so long on a Sunday.

Other that that, I'm finding we are in the right season for Cider.  Its great for rehydration.....yum!

I always got a really bad headache if I haven't worn sunglasses when sailing, even in the cloudiest of days. So I always wear sunnies now, makes life much more pleasant.

Yep, forgot to take mine on the water when I was doing the 700 coaching at Datchet a couple of weekends ago and spent most of the next day in a dark room with a headache.  One of the worst ever...doh!

Sunglasses are a must for me...

Take food on the water with you - lack of sugar gives me headaches a lot. Mars bars are good, or try to eat something immediately before going on the water and immediately coming off. Too much plain water also doesn't help, try squash instead.

You're not drinking anywhere enough...beer!

If you keep going, you'll find that after a few, you won't notice your headache any more.

Definatly consider how your taking the water, I had this problem at the gym recently with feeling violently ill and a headache, dont drink large amounts of plain water in 1 go, small sips over a longer period or an isotonic drink are a better idea.

Yep, isotonic drinks can be made with orange squash and a pinch of salt... though I find just squash works fine most of the time. Keep eating!
