Either way it seems I may have to make an accellerated single hander
purchase, which means something second hand. I'm wondering Contender because there are a few racing at our club right now, an Assym Vortex cos it would be an easier trapeze platform to slide into and there seem to be a few about but I'm worried about their potential as a sea going dip the nose in waves sort of boat. I had been indeed until lunchtime today hanging around to see how the Halo developed as a suitable subject to convert to trapeze and assymmetric but that wont happen in a hurry, so suddenly I have a decision to make due to unforseen crew circumstances. I'm suddenly in a right quandry... |

I have a "laser" you can have at a competetive price, if you give me a week or so to fix the small hole in the bottom of it. I hear they are quite popular as a single hander, and represented at this thing called the oolyimpics, which is meant to be a sporting event they can never find a proper home for?
will that do? |

I sailed a Vortex in the open sea for a year or more and
it had no problem with the waves. When the bow dips it just pops out the other side. However, you have two daggerboards and a dagger-rudder to work with close to shore. They're ali so you won't break them but it's something to think about. |

The Vortex has effectively got three daggerboards, so wouldn't recommend one for Hythe. Do you deffo want to trapeze? If so, the Contender is the only trapeze monohull I can think of with a centreboard. Otherwise there are a few cats (there, I said it!) or the standard Blaze with its wings instead of the trapeze. Or, a Laser. Dead easy to sail and sell on later, and you'll find one within a week. |

Honestly, I do find the Laser boring, not much to do just sitting there, I
read up on the Vortex after posting this and spotted the transoms being ripped off by the fixed rudder, honestly what is it with fixed rudders, my MPS had one, totally hopeless for beach situations. So the Contender, the rig does look so old fashioned with that low low aspect sail and even lower boom, but there isn't much else out there as an entry level single hander for the would be trapeze artist is there? I even spotted one for sale with my old sail number, could it be fate? They go upwind really well, are not bad sea boats and have the centreboard and quite a massive one at that, but let down by such a pathetic rig, I wonder why it was never upgraded, don't tell me - class rules again.. There is some relatively big wind Contender sailing in this video...
CONTENDER VIDEO It's on a lake so you may not approve Grumph, but it shows they can be sailed in wind. I remember seeing some epic videos a few years ago but can't find them right now. Maybe try looking on the Contender Class Association site. They do go upwind very well, and they are quite easy to sail. The boom is very low. I found that I had to let the kicker off to get under it as the end of the boom is basically on the aft deck when you crank it on. Yes, the sail will be governed by the International Class Association. They do allow carbon spars which I imagine has improved the response of the rig, and they do allow modern sailcloth materials, but I think the overall shape is pretty much set. |

Watching that fella getting thwacked by the boom.. That makes you want to rush right out and get one - not.
Surely it's not just me, but what a yawning great gap in the market, with near impossible rides like the 600, 700 and MPS at one end of the market demanding of near professional skill and hours of practise and impractical dinosaurs at the other end. Now we have a single trap two handers for us 'idiots,' surely a massive market must exist for a trapeze 'trainer' which would serve as a conduit to the higher performers? |

From what I've read on other threads, you're surely too small for a Contender, GRF? I have to say that when you look at the up-wind speed of the Contender, I can only conclude that the rig efficiency must be second to none. It's the same with the Fireball - looks old-fashioned with its triangular planform main, but given the small amount of righting moment available, the thrust/heeling moment must be better than most sexy, fat-headed rigs. And btw, if you added more roach/a fat head to the Fireball or Contender mainsails it would make them lower in aspect ratio. I've noticed several references on the forum lately to 'high aspect' when what was meant was trapezoidal, elliptical or rectangular planform; aspect ratio = span^2/area. If you could wait, there's a una-rig for the 3000 in the pipeline that would suit you quite well, but at present it's got to be a Blaze, from what I can see, and add your own kite. Or make the guy who already did such a superb job of converting his an offer he can't refuse... |

Who is he? Is it a guy on the I.O.W.? It keeps coming up blaze, but I've watched loads of videos of them in action in a breeze and those damn racks will do for me in the waves we get here once the wind tops 15 knots. I also doubt I've got the weight for a contender in anything other than light airs and if it were just light air sailing I might as well get hold of my old Musto again, it's rotting away somewhere down in the Hastings area, but seriously is there nothing else? |
