I have been sailing for 25 years and have hardly ever worn sun glasses, but am now regretting that. I have been diagnosed with pterygium in both eyes - not serious yet, but irreversible (except by surgery), and potentially may grow over the pupils. At any rate, wearing contact lenses is now too uncomfortable. The causes of pterygium? According to my GP sun, wind and sand - I wonder where I got exposure to that? So the moral of the story? Wear sunglasses when sailing!

On that note, can anyone recommend any? My eyesight's not terrible, but not perfect (-1.25), so I am considering prescription sunglasses as I can't wear contacts any more. Is there anything to bear in mind when chosing a pair? Can I get trendy designs with prescription lenses?

Cheers.

As I don't need prescription sunglasses I have the Oakley Minute Polarised sunnies. They aren't cheap but I managed to get some from a Cycle store less than the rrp. I chose the polarised as it is better for the glare etc you get form the water/sun.

Oakley do prescription sunglasses just do a google search.

Choose a style of frame that allows you to connect a lanyard easily! After paying for prescription glasses you dont want to have them fall off and sink.

Does anyone recommend those 'reactor' lenses that switch between dark/light? Whenever I wear my prescription sunglasses I find there is a time when the clouds cover the sun and then it all goes very dark for me!

Sorry to hear your news peaky. Can I ask how long you were wearing lenses for and what sort. I never wear sunnies cos they end up covered in spray but my Acuvue lenses have a UV filter so I have been assuming that this was protecting me. But I guess the lens just covers the iris and pupil rather than the conjunctiva so maybe I should reconsider.

Yep, totally concur, have something I guess similar myself cant remember
what it's called.(slight whitening around the periphery of the cornea) will
continually expand caused by excess UV over 40 years of watersports.
Gave up contacts as a result, have used reactor prescriptions ever since
diagnosis.

I've had contacts for about 3 years (and glasses for a bout 3 years before that, but hardly ever wore them).  I just have daily disposables from Spec Savers, I don't think there is a UV filter on them but I'm not sure.  But as you say, they don't cover the conjunctiva, so even with a UV filter you're not fully protected.

Spray on the lens is the reason I have not previously worn sun glasses much, but I'm now thinking that may be a small price to pay.

Good point about a lanyard, Merlin.

Merlin, Reactalights / Transitions are great, Ive got them in my "main" pair.

Pricey though (I think this pair were £350 all up, but that was including frames) but they are great. Watch out for tunnels when its sunny though .. Unless its well lit, you cant see a thing!

www.gosportspex.co.uk is where a friend of mine (a cyclist) gets his.
Certainly seems to have a wide range with many prescription options, so could be worth having a chat.
I always wear sunglasses. I find the glare from the water gives me a blinding headache and sore eyes after a while if I dont...
