Well I guess I'm an example of someone who made his hobby his work
and was also lucky enough for that 'work" to become an Industry beyond
the marine business from which it initially sprang.

I have to say it does alter ones perception of that hobby in ways that are
not altogether conducive to better enjoyment of the hobby, but
nonetheless make working life more interesting, so it is a trade off and
one with hindsight I wouldn't change.

Interesting that I spend a lot of time resisting the natural urge to take my
commercial expertise into my new found hobby, a world that could do
with a drastic commercial shake up if ever there was imho, but
nevertheless I shall still avoid for the near future, wishing to continue the
more pleasant and to a certain degree simpler existence of the pure
hobbyist and consumer.

But advice to one starting out in life, give it a go if the opportunity arises,
it's a lot more rewarding than flipping burgers, standing at a lathe,
burning your eyes in front of a computer screen or spewing bollox down
a telephone line at some call centre.

This is most definitely true. I spent 10 years or so in the [motor] bike trade and the one thing I noticed was that folk who actually work with them never get into all this biker lifestyle stuff. You really need to get away from work sometimes.

I could have done with that advice!
