Topic: Humming from the centreboardPosted: 22 Mar 09 at 10:58pm |

We have just launched our rebuilt Hartley 16 trailer sailer and we sailed it yesterday, however we keep getting a humming noise coming from the centreboard case. We have a 10mm steel plate for our centreboard. Can anyone tell me why it is humming? It must be causing vibration and turbulance as I can feel it slightly in the rudder so it must be slow - can anyone confirm that and advise me as to how I can get rid of the humming? Many thanks. Check the back edge of both boards. If they are dinked or quite blunt then by sanding them to make a slightly thinner trailing edge it will probably get rid of it. It may also be worth checking they both fit tightly in the cases. |

The normal answer is the file down the trailing edge of the board. That
might be a little difficult in your case as you've got a steel plate. |

Just rub down one edge of it, 45 degrees that will cure it.
The trailing edge that is. |

We have a blunt edge for our trailing edge, maybe we'll try making it to a 45 degree angle. The humming seems to go when we lift the plate slightly, perhaps it shouldn't have to go all the way down. Ah well, looks like lots of boat tuning for us over the winter.

Sometimes simply packing to eliminate any sideways movement (e.g. strips of laminate glued in the plate case or on the plate) can stop the vibration establishing itself. The fact that you can stop it by partially raising the plate might suggest packing would be enough (assuming it's easier than filing - will you be removing galvanizing by doing that?)
