I have to buy a couple of new perpetual trophies for the International Moth Class as we now need some 'Low Rider' Trophies for the top boat in our Nationals and our Travellers series not using hydrofoils which are fully 'in class'. In the sailing and yachting press no firms seem to advertise trophies for sale with an obvious sailing relevance. Sports shops have plenty of trophies for golfers, darts and dancing but not much or any sailing relevance. Can anyone recommend firms where I might go shopping ? Just another cup or shild is rather boring and not want I really want. There must be plenty about if I knew where to look? Help?  Colin Newman

Hi Colin

We have supplied a few trophies that are a bit different.  We use wood boards with printed aluminium sheet on it.  The difference is that we can print different pictures, names, boat names etc on short runs.  That is you could take a picture of the winner and get a trophy in a couple of days with their picture, name and boat name on it.  Literally if you can get it on a computer screen it can be printed as a one off.  Not the cheapest trophies but personnalised!

If you want anymore info then send us an email or private message.

Hi Colin,

Alot of the older trophies at clubs in the Yorkshire area were obtained from Astins of Huddersfield. Take a look at www.astins.co.uk , look at 'categories' and 'prestige range'. From memory, most of the 'cast' type silver trophies were of one or two sail dinghies or yachts on hard wood plinths. I doubt that it would be possible to get a trophy which is similar in shape to a Moth.

Some other sites are www.art-gallery.co.uk , www.allsportsawards.co.uk and www.giftsandtrophies.co.uk .

Another option would be to go to a wood carver/sculptor with some photographs of Moths and have a trophy or plaque carved in a hard wood such as ebony, with a substantial base.

No doubt 'cost' is going to be another factor.

Finally, you could also do a check on Google under "sailing trophies".

Could we create virtual trophies for the most inventive signature on the Y&Y forum?

The new Contender sailor, Mike278, has sound advice when it comes to self-medication. We should get him in touch with Dr Clifford, they could exchange posologies.

KnightMare's recently acquired signature has already generated attention. I'm not sure she actually meant "You'll never forget your first Cadet you dragged, wrapped in your spinni, through icy waters, until a swift tack freed you of the little squirt!". If anything, that would be far too long as a signature . Big Man's signature isn't (or wasn't, where are you??) in the best of taste, but hey, that's boys for you.

Any other examples? Who gets the prize??

Back to the trophies, we had a carpenter who was acadet parent for a while and he carved us soem of our own tropies, just simple copies of cadets This would be a cool idea for the moths, either a small copy for each person who wins or a bigger one that is a yearly trophy, or depending on money, both.

That could be a realy gorgeous trophy because the boats are so nice.

The last trophy I won was a plastic 'cube'. The nice thing about this is that you are guaranteed not to be able to break it on the way home! Laser events are now giving out cubes due to the amount of broken of glasses over the years (and the fact you can send them through the post!)... It is a pain trying to evostick (glue) trophies back together when the bag gets dropped!
