We've only clocked about 15 knts in our V3k; which was actually on a 2 sail close reach with the crew standing behind the helm. Think we've had more with the kite up in a strong gust but didn't have the GPS on.
The real thing about the V is the low weight, which gets it planing quicker and allows it to accelerate faster in gusts. Absolute top speed of a V3k probably isn't more than that of a Laser 3000 with a set of North sails on, and being that bit twitchier the V is harder to sail in a really strong wind where the old laser excelled. But by god it FEELs fast. ![]() ![]() Compared to the only RS500 at our club, we're consistently 2 minutes or so faster in a 1 hr race. But they haven't had it long and are sailing at the back of the "fast" fleet whilst we're at the front of the "medium" in cleaner air. Oh and those nice spinnlocks for the kite and the kicker are standard kit! Edited by NickA |

Graeme the one problem with changing our handicap to 1000 is that over the last few weeks we have been sailing to a handicap of about 950-970 ish, and going back to the other posts earlier about speed, andrew and i had 18.5 Knots in a 35knot wind in the old 3000 over a 100m stretch, i do believe that the new V3000 wont have a problem doing 20, everything is so much tighter and stiffer, even the new rudder makes a hell of a difference.

Good point. I guess I just feel the boat is good, we have a great builder, and both deserve to succeed. Actually, I avoided class racing last year by adopting a PY of 1000 to let me into the Fast Handicap to get to sail some longer courses; I wouldn't dream of claiming 1032. |

It needs saying that I believe Medway M races his V3000 off a locally agreed handicap of 1010 and still occupies the front of the fleet most of the time! |

It sounds to me that the moral is that most people like one-design fleet racing. The Laser 3000's seem to have dissappeared from our club racing since the 500 has started to establish itself. I am not sure why you are spending so much time promoting the v3000 on this forum if you really prefer handicap racing. If it gets too popular you may find the PY does not remain at the 1032 inherited from the Laser 3000. |

Well, 30% of Vandercraft 3000's anyway, and no, I actually prefer handicap racing - in cycling terms I'm a time-trialist by nature, not a racer. We had two 500's in the club, but we're down to one now, which rarely sails. There's a moral there. |

Ah .. I now understand the attraction. If you can get 4 or five boats of any class out these days you are likely to start raving about that particular boat. It suddenly means it is worth going out for a race even if it is not blowing your ideal wind strength. Sounds like we should agree to differ and encourage anyone from North Kent to sail 3000's at Wilsonian and anyone from West London to sail 500's at Datchet ! What do we do for the rest of the country though ? It sounds like you have almost 50% of the production run of the v3000 while we have around 5% of the 500's built (there are actually 11 in our dinghy park but getting more than 5 out at once is a struggle). |

Very true, then add a probably knacked a halyard and cleats... But I guess that's what you get when you sail a boat which hasn't been loved. Might have to pop down and have a look at the 3k this weekend.

Think you were unlucky with the 3000 you were sailing. I'd rate the 3k chute as being one of the easiest I've used, with the proviso that it helps greatly if the helm pulls or at least holds the windward sheet on 'wrong side' drops. 'Right side' drops are a complete doddle thanks to the huge chute mouth. But old, knackered sails don't go into chutes well in any class. I'd only sailed RS400's on holiday and found the kite impossible to get into the chute (ditto 4000); then I tried a friend's boat with a decent kite and found it no problem at all... |
