After a few seasons off (kids arrival) I'm keen to get back into some dinghy racing.

We'd like to do some club sailing (prob one of the bigger lakes around London) and maybe afew opens  or handicap events.

My son is 10 and approx 5 stone. I'm 13.5 stone so we have approx. 18.5 total.

He's done some sailing but is basically a beginner.

I dont want to scare him off so want something fun, simple, light but not too tippy.

I did have Tasar once which was brilliant - quick and very stable- and would seem a good bet except that the boom spanner system might be too hard for him ?

Also I think they have a min racing weight of 130kg ?

Spinnakers and trapezes are obviously out.

Dont really want Enterprise, Firefly, Graduate etc.

A N12 mightbe too tippy ?

Any other thoughts ?

Id recommend a N12 although they are seen to be "tippy". After you have got used to their wide "tippy" hull it will work to your favor giving you more righting moment over the sails.

PS I seem to have one for sale

There are a few Tasars at Queen Mary I believe, which could influence your desicion- its always good to sail a boat with others at your club.

Not sure you will see many N12s/ Miracles/ fireflies sailing on those big pieces of water.

Got to try a Tasar ....Underated in the UK but don't let that put you off.  Good international following, refined, not too expensive and  in the right conditions surprisingly fast.   If you have a young one up front it is much easier than a spinnaker boat and still faster and much more exciting than most.  Spacious and forgiving but very rewarding if you get it in the groove. Old ones are cheap but still very competitive with a sort out.

Taser is a a good boat and will accomodate your son as he grows.

N12 very tippy.

I've found with mast spanners its just a question of getting in the habit of grabbing it on the wy through the boat mid tack and then it seems to go through readily... Does the Tasar one really have that much load on?
