Laser 2 - Any Good

   I started crewing in a L2 for a few races. Its a great boat, not too much of a handle in the normal conditions but in light stuff you might want to do what one guy at the club does, thats to chuck out the heavy weight crew and search the club for an Oppi sailor or take it out single handed!

	Its by no means a bad boat. A pole kite, but one with a decent length pole, so quite flexible. But not much open event racing on the UK nowadays, and not much freeboard, so you get a wet ass all the time. The Laser 3000 is/was an asymmetric version of the Laser two that didn't really sell in any great numbers. There's a variant of that now, V3000 I think they call it, which is in production from a different builder, but with yet more rig changes. The various versions of the 3000 had 15,11,16 boats at the last 3 Champs, the Laser 2 15,16,12, so there's not an enormous amount of difference in the boats at Championships unless the new version of the 3000 becomes more popular. The hull is a 70s Cherub derivative, so does like a bit of breeze to be at its best.

	performance? Depends on your weight, my Wife and I are collectively 21 stone and we do well in the light stuff. We have done well in races in force 2 -3. Any less than a two is a bit dull and frustrating. We have fun in the heavy stuff too. The L2 will still be thrashing along when other boats have given up. The L2 is cheap, very tough and light on it's trolley. How does it sail??? The L2 is easy to sail but difficult to sail well (like all boats), outhaul is tricky until you get used to it. Downhaul works well with newish sails but a pig with old sails where the bolt rope has lost it's stretch.......some parts and sails are expensive though. 3 sail reaching in a blow is mind blowing, very close to the water and fast. The spinny puts some off but well worth persisting with for the added flexibility. If the symmetric spinny puts you off then the V3000 is another option. The L2 is a simple boat but it's also one of the best fun for your pound boats there is IMO Edited by GK.LaserII

	The Fireball would probably give you better racing - lots of them available, still popular at many clubs, good circuit for when you get good.

	Hello. if you are looking at getting a cheapish single trapeze boat you would be better getting a laser 3000, they perform better in the lighter stuff than the laser 2 and they have an assymetric kite. visit http://sailingdinghies.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=78 304 is the best boat on the market currently, it has had a modified class legal gnav kicker and its the cheapest on the market. the 3000 also uses the same hull shape as the laser 2 but has a better rig and sails. 	Can I have some opinions on the Laser 2 ?. I am looking for 2 hander trapeze and this seems a good, inexpensive option (buying second hand). However I have been advised that these can be poor performers unless in strong winds - is this true ?. Any thoughts on general saleability would also be much appreciated
