Our club mebership figures have been bumping along at about the same (reasonably healthy) level for several years. The regular Sunday club races have a turnout that represents about 8 - 9% of the total membership, 10 - 11% if OOD, RO and safety boat crews are included.

I was wondering what other clubs turnouts were?

I appreciate that these figures are going to vary wildly with clubs like HISC, having a high turnout (dunno, could be wrong there). Just trying to get a rough idea of the average, what's the average humble or not so humble clubs experience??

well we have a healthy mempbership but we only ever get about 5% of the membership out. unless you count the slow boat sailers (sorry cruiser sailors) as well then it might be 10-15% on a busy day in the summer. in dnghy week i suppose we must have about 20% of the membership around.

all figures are rough gusses, i suspect i may have underestimated the numbers for busy summers days.

600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

We had 15 boats out today at a guess, +/-2. No idea how many members but I would gues around 150 boats in the boat park. So many of them are never sailed.

Probably the same issue around the country,

At the SC we have Windsurfers, Cruisers and dinghy sailors. So when its windy the windsurfers are down. When its summer, warm and blowing a F3 you could have a lot more members down and the cruiser members out sailing.

During the SC Cadet week, we can have about 100 cadets, so thats about 50 or so families, plus the cruiser sailors escape the mayhem and go for their own Cruiser Cruise. So during that week there may be around 25% or so members at the club.

All difficult to say really, depends on what is going on and other factors.

Wilsonian SC has 90-odd single members and under 70 families, yet we get between 30 and 40 boats out each Sunday - a very high percentage that I can only put down to the very friendly atmosphere. Work parties and duties mean everyone is 'involved' and feels part of the club.

Plus, the sailing on the Medway is pretty darned good. Apologies to Hoo Freezer competitors: owing to the short course-length demanded by average lap timing (a.l.t.) on that event, you only get to see much less than the (worst) half of our waters. Hoo Ness really need to scrap the a.l.t. - it only works if the fastest boats do 5 or 6 laps, so the 2 or 3 laps they do in the Freezer makes a nonsense of the idea anyway.

Burghfield has about 750 memberships

Around 50 to 60 boats for Sunday racing.
With a regular turnout of 60 on a Wednesday evening in the summer (some overlap with Sunday racing, but not much).
25 to 30 on a Saturday (no overlap with Sunday racing).

We feel that we are only reaching abvout 20% of the membership.... but how to involve the rest??? Each year around 10% (some years 15%) dont renew their membership....

Funny old game, we have a relatively low number of members but our wednesday turnouts must get between 40-50% some weeks.  We have very few boats on the beach which never hot the water, we could just use some of those spare members you lt have got.  I mean If they are not gonna sail surely it doesn't matter where the club they are not going to sail is based
I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

We have around 300 members and are lucky if 1% turnout for racing each week.  Over the season maybe 5% will race more than 10 times.  Most of our membership are not local and alot of them just use the bar and catering facilities instead of sailing

..appreciate the replies. It clearly varies depending on the club but our 10% seems to be near the norm. The members who don't sail still pay their membership so I guess it doesn't matter that much. We do have less experienced members who I think would like to race but feel a bit intimidated by the whole thing.....could do with running a "start racing" course (maybe) to get the numbers up.

at hill head this year we have "race squads" for toppers, mirors, lasers, adults, cadets (the kids not the boats), and fevas. all of them are new this yer apart from the cadet race squad so we shall see what happens. hopefully we will have a lot more people on the water.
