I have been given a job at Rockley Watersports in France this summer. The only problem is that i don't have my instructor qualification. I am booked onto a course at Carsington Water sailing club but i am the only one. It needs at least 3 people to go ahead. Basically i am asking if there is anyone who needs to do their course, please come on this one. It is cheapest that i can find anywhere at £265 for the course and £75 for the pre-entry. Dates Tues 27th May Pre-entry (this is not vital i may have another option for this) Instructor Course 5 days 28th May - 1st June Please if you are intersted let me know. There is a slight possibility of my family getting a cottage close by and an even slighter possibibility that the people who help me out here may be able to stay in said cottage. (Only a very slight possibility but it's worth a mention) I wont be able to work without this qualification so please let me know if you want to do the course. Thank you Nathan Littley |

You may also want to get in touch with your local RYA Officer. Check out who that person is from your local RYA Newsletter your SC gets or from the RYA website. There may be another course running just as cheap nearby at a sailing club. But £60 is cheap as chips, even if it means making your family have a holiday on the south coast!! |

Does anyone on the forum teach watersports full time? What can an instructor (be it sailing, windsurfing, diving, kite surfing etc) expect to earn a month?

I worked full time last year form january to september, I was earning if I remembe rigt £5.50 an hour and taking home up to about £800 maybe a bit more a month not alot for the hours I was doing. I know some centres offer better wages though. Now I am not teaching I miss being outside but love having my weekend back.

Southampton is not practical really. The cheap rate is for uni students only. Is anyone interested in carsington? Nathan |

Ross You get more working in the UK than you do abroad. Depending on who you work for depends on your pay. Centres basically pay about the minimum wage which is pants really, but it is the standard pay rate for that type of job. What you have to watch though is whether you can live on site for next to nothing or have to pay the going rate. I work as a casual/freelance and get paid a lot more than the full time workers and can turn down work if I want but it doesn't come that often. |

At places abroad (sunsail, rockley, neilson etc) that include accomodation, expect about £80 or so a week after deducations, of which it is common to receive about €50 a week in cash with the remainder paid into your bank account. Gnerally, this cash amount remains the same even if you're a senior, or get bonuses for returning staff, more than one watersport qualification etc- the idea being that everyone is socialising on about the same level of cash. The rates abroad are not minimum wage- they fall outside it. You will get more basic pay if you work in the UK. But living costs are also likely to be higher, and so are beer costs. And you won't get as good a tan most summers I'd reckon though if you wanted to make a proper living from teaching sailing you're better off staying in the UK. |
