Talking about strong winds, its a pity nothing was posted about the Welsh Sailing Games in Cardiff Bay last year. Me and a mate were sailing a spice (a topper equivilant to the penultimate 14s) and the wind was a force 7 gusting 8 on the final day, on the way upwind we were twin wiring of the jib solely becauses we were playing so much main! And downwind we proved that you can soak downwind with an assymetric! - 230sft of kite is a bit of a handful in those conditions I can tell you!

Needless to say we capsized quite a few times and on the first day (F6-7) we snapped the webbing holdin the kicker to the boom and had to sail the rest of the weekend with 6mmrope wrapped around the boom about 7 times as the kicker strap.

Much fun was had although the following stomach upset from the water (and exhaustion) put us out of work for a week following the event.

By the way as a bit of a sell out, anyone reading this feel free to travel to the Sailing Games next year at Cardiff Bay it is a great event always with crazy wind, just dont swallow the water!

Tacking downwind refers to gybing when you're lifted so you sail the shortest distance to the leeward mark (remember Asymetrics can't soak dead downwind).

U'd b suprised, when I got a 29er I had 2 explain what it was 2 near enuf all my relatives, even the ones that claim to be sailors. and my dad still cant get over the idea of a boat that looks like, in his words "a flying teatray" mind u, he still thinks tacking downwind is a strange and revoloutionary idea!

BTW, I did the Mary in 87, and got covered in ice! Dunno which is worse, but I genuinely thought I might die of cold if we capsized, which was v. likely as the jib sheets froze, so you nearly went in every time you tacked.

I was supposed to be racing in my moth. In fact, there were supposed to be 6/7 moths out. Most didn't turn up - only me and one other did and that was because we thought we'd sail my L3k. It was so windy that I couldn't stand up properly. Needless to say I didn't go out!
