... reckon a certain mr ellison might be inclined to agree with you there, but he's obviously got sticking power (and deep pockets), cos now he's done it twice!.. cheer up mr oracle, you know what they say.... third time's a charm!   expect some nice hikes on Oracle $$ support by-the-hour-rates in Q3-Q4!!!

....and now back to dinghies, like I said earlier, I reckon you'll never get agreement on the most expensive dinghy (cept the laser £££££ ouch) but what about most expensive 00000 dinghy campaign ever?

... come on team gbr... who's been sponsored up with a full trailer of boats, car and accomodation for the five-ring circus and who's going to share the details on the cash sums involved with the forum? and who's made the most rockstar demands of their support team?

It must make a huge difference over waves but less easy to assess.

Regarding carbon in the rig not making much difference. It makes a huge difference in a fast boat, most noticeable when rounding leeward marks, the inertia of the rig determines what radius you can round at. Actually I remember it affects even the humble Laser - not so much because of the speed but because of the weight!

Villain,

Rather than go and buy new FB sails speak to the top guys who will happily sell you a 'used' set for a fraction of the price (just make sure you buy sails that will work properly with your mast).

I am told Rush sails are good, if you speak to Tim Rush he often has second hand sets floating around and will even advise (and help) if they need to be re-cut for your mast.

I would go Carbon for the sheer fact that it'll let you keep the boat dead on minimum weight for more of its life.

Every time you use filler your going to add a small bit of weight, same for any paint scheme, same even for fittings! Starting with a stupidly low weight and then addinglead will also mean you can take correctors out as the boat ages.

Does Carbon soak up water like fibreglass does after a long time?

And my contender for most overpriced boat has to be a fireball. We just spent £450 on one ... and have budgetted spending a total of £800 to get it back in top form again ( Paints / Varnishes/fittings )

That £800 we are spending total will barely buy you a new mainsail!

I think jibs are in the region of £350 ish! and Kite's in the region of £480!

But of course ... They are damn fast! *Hunts for tuning guides after wednesdays sluggish performance*

im curious, how much weight do you save on a 12 by having it all in carbon? DiscoBall how much of your boat is carbon then? and how much of a difference does saving weight make? apart from acceleration i dont suspect the top speed will be affected much by a few kilograms especially when boats are pretty light in polyester or epoxy anyway.

My boat cost £4500  seven years ago, and if I wanted to sell it - which I don't - I'd probably be able to get 6,000 euros for it. Even if it was £10k in 1990, work out the depreciation and tell me it's F*****g Dear
