I assume this is going onto a gelcoat boat ?

If so

1, Go buy a tube of Gelcoat filler (touchup, not the stuff with chopped stand in it)

2, Buy a pan type scourer and sponge thingy (the ones with plastic "wire" on one side and a close cell sponge on the other

3, Find a pen

4, take a very flexable spatula and mix up a small amount and find an old bit of cardboard or somesuch to have a practice on.

5, Apply a thin layer (do not have to be too accurate) to the area to be tested and then "stipple" with both sides of the spoonge and expirment as to the different grade of grippy you can create,  Note, the larger mountains you want, the thicker the layer of filler you will need.

6, Now if you are feeling clever you can try to remember which side of the sponge you used to create the different grips, or use the pen found in step 3 and write it beside each "test"

7, while your collection of tests are drying (won't take long if it's hot).  Clean the area(s) of the boat to be grippied...

8, work out which is the best grip for you and then apply using the same technique as above.

I did both sides of my F16 with one tube, but there was already some grip tape on the hulls.  If you really what to know, I could work out approx area covered with one tube.

It is VERY grippy and very sharp !

Sugar desolves and stays sticky for weeks.

Sand is heavy, although very cheap if you nick itr from the beach.

Two methods I have used are; Hi build primer mixed with silica and roll on. Leaves a tough stipled effect.

Epoxy primer undercoat mixed with Griptex exta coarse particles, leaves a more profesional look.

Personally ive had it with progrip - been using it for years, but when you want to push out from the middle of the boat onto the wire after a fast tack it becomes all slipperly!!! its like it becomes slipperly when wet - and its all over the floor of my 12! Thats comming off!

Use the abrasive stuff, had it on the edge of my A class fatastic stuff. as for hurting your knees - who said that!?!? GET OFF THE FLOOR!!!!

If your in an I14 you should be on the wire anyway, or get a bigger rig  haha, sorry!

Didnt need a bigger rig to sail past the 12s in weymouth

Or one other cheap option is to progrip the bottom of your wetsuit boots! you may laf - but a friend did it, just left them on the boat - swapped over boots and went sailing! works well, but a bit of an effort if you ask me!

I'ev used a product from A company called Minator UK it is simply an aerosol can that sparys out a textured Epoxy only problem is the limited colours, Black, Yellow and one other can't remember what but is slso available in clear.  Simple to use and cheap to boot £9.99 inc. VAT and Delivery i'm very impressed so far doesn't slip even under water it is agressive but so so much as you'd damage your sailing gear.
Here's some pics if they work:-
