All I can say is that they were being very arrogant and should have planned better. Particualrily as they know you in your power boat can do a maximum of eight knots. Not much chance of getting out of the way with that limtation.

Not sure it does in this case. http://www.conservancy.co.uk/uploads/user_documents/CHCByela ws.pdf 10 says that Colregs (IRPCS) apply and as someone else said, those say overtaking vessel keeps clear, regardless of power or sail.

You should not have had to avoid boats going faster than you. The rules of the road state overtaking boat must keep clear. It doesn't matter that they are under sail and you are a power boat.

It aslo states that power gives way to sail without giving a qualifier of speed or direction other than large poewrboat has rights in limited manouverability area.  which gets priority there? I would still have said sail has rights but then I sail more than I drive powerboats so I would really.

and yeah on the subject of 25hp engines, I was doing safety cover at my club for the junior week, and got dumped with the weedy rib which had a poxy small engine at the back, which isn't a problem on a lake/resevoir but is when you're doing chichester harbour.

And so i was following the junior's just as they were coming back from the windward mark, which happened to be crossing the Hayling Island regatta, so i was trying to drive this boat through a whole bunch of fast assymetric's following some 420's all the time trying to avoid boats which were going faster than me! not fun at all.

I dunno i'm tempted to blame the sailor, they're always being unreasonable and changing direction everytime the wind changes, and then some times change direction by as much as 90 degrees for no reason.
