GB Sailing Challenge - still confused

I didn’t go to the Draycote Dash, but reading the report on the Front page has not made the scoring system any clearer to me.

The event is dual scored, once using the relatively standard Great Lakes system for the Sailjuice Winter Series and then again using “Dynamic Handicapping” for the GBSC.

Simon Lovesey says "Perhaps the best way of describing it is as a 'Flying Lap', where we take each boat's best single performance around the race course. Whereas normal PY handicapping such as the RYA or the Great Lakes is a measure of time on time, we're taking a measure of time on distance. And whereas conventional results are based on your performance across the weekend, we're taking your best performance in an individual race, a bit like your best lap when Formula One drivers are trying to qualify for pole position on the starting grid."

That all sounds a bit gimmicky to me, but what does that actually mean and how does it make the racing fairer or more enjoyable? Do they take your single best lap of the event or the best lap per race? What handicapping is applied? Does it favour boats with a sweet spot rather than more balanced designs? Is there a clearer explanation somewhere?

chuck all the entries in a hat and draw the winners from there. The "inner circle" can then spend days arguing the advantages of a bowler over the standard flat cap.

So rewarding long, heavy, narrow boats that don’t accelerate in gustsor slow down in lulls?

If true, a needlessly complicated way of not encouraging participation...
