Tiller extension joint replacement

Hi everyone.

I'm new to the forum, and my first post.

Looking for some advice re changing the rubber joint on my tiller extension (see pic).

Do the aluminium rivets need drilling out, or is it just a push fit into the green bit. The extension itself rotates, so i can't see how it is fixed.

Thanks. The whole thing rotates, so don't think its glued. I agree, the rivets look too high. I wonder if the green bit is riveted in, and the rubber joint fixed to the green bit within the tiller extension.

Agree with Jim's suggestion to remove the rivet and see what is going on. I usually fix mine in with screws which works well. Also suggest that for the replacement you buy the type of joint which has string in the centre of the joint so that when the plastic joint breaks (it will), you still have contact with the tiller rather than having the extension free in your hands.

Funny you should say that, i just sawed the end off. The green bit doesn't want to come off at all
Looks like a bit of a stupid design to me.

Ok, just pulled out, but the green bit shot over the side of the boat, lost to the tide. Looks like a new tiller extension now. Any recommendations?
