I've been wondering if anyone else talks to their boat, I don't mean in depth conversations, just words of encouragement or pure desperation, for example "please go faster" or " don't kill us!"...... Do other people do it or am I going mad .

(The talking thing usually works)

I talk to my boat! I'm not as bad as my crew last year, she insisted that everyone was nice to her boat or it'd slow down, and apparently rubbing it's tummy got gusts to come..

I've seen myself actually giving my boat a team talk to the boat before sailing..... that sounds pretty nuts doesn't it. Whats even better is talking to the boat on a Saturday night on-route home from the pub, done that at a few events... even worse is when you've got a girlfriend watching you insisting on getting a taxi, whilst you are "checking there is no water lying on the cover" or by that point checking to see if the mast is still up or if the boat is still there!

Ooooooh no! I'm usually kind to my boat, but it's a bilingual boat, really. Yesterday, I got to the gybe mark in a gust: « Time to gybe now... T'es prêt ? Vas-y mon bébé ! » and when it works, it's a "Good boy!!"

It sometimes goes into more stern words, when the mainsheet get wrapped up in... everything: « Ah non, tu vas pas recommencer, eh ?! »

Got to talk to your boat, I think. I only wish it would be like plants: talk to them and they grow bigger - as I am a chatterbox, it wouldn't take long to turn my Topper into a Contender!

Yep, I talk to my boat / self....

When I was sailing the Hurriane my last crew would always get worried when I stopped talking when it was howling windy as it meant I was actually having to think/concentrate about sailing the boat and so it must be  fing windy and close to the edge stuff........

I now worry myself when I stop talking to myself as it must be f..ing windy and close to wipeout time....

yup. I always talk to the boat, I say that if I can beat so and so to the windward mark and hold on the reach the boat will get a treat at the end of the race. Also rubbing the decks gently in a sensitive (but not erotic) way seems to amek it go a bit faster. And when i capsize I just act calmly and say "It's ok, there's nothing to worry about here, u just had a little fall that's all".

Am i mad?

Needs to sail more...

I've heard myself utterring to the boat " If you hurt me, I'll hurt you worse and you won't be able to play for a few weeks" - works everytime!

I can definately admit to being in the talking boat crowd but it seems to change depending on what kind of boat your in...

Back in my topper sailing days it was always 'come one, come on, you can catch them'

Then In the laser I could never bring myself to be nice to it so it was always something along the lines of 'dont f%king let me down now'

Now in the moth I dont have enough time/breath to talk to the boat but I talk to myself a lot 'ooooooh my god, ooh my god, O Ma Gwd!!, phew, argggh, ooh ma god, (splash), phew'

I got so used to cursing both the boat and myself when I had my Laser and subsequently RS600 that during the 2yrs I owned my 49er I upset too many crews. I wasnt shouting at the crew, but shouting "you bas*ard" or "come on you bi*ch" at the boat.
It also meant that even though my fiancee and I were pretty quick in both the Dart 18's and now Spitfire we havnt competed in any events in case I start shouting and a) she gets embarrased or b) thinks I'm shouting at her.
Best stay with the 700 I guess and leave the cat sailing to my fiancee and her dad!

I sometimes have mood problems, and a string of psychiatrists have failed to help me, but my current 2 hour bookings on sunday mornings with a certain special "girl" are really starting to make a difference. I can talk through all my problems, and being not a great thinker, I can get my feedback in more physical ways, being it a soaking or sailing past someone else, I get all the advice I need.
