Awesome, video is good too, just looks terrifying to me, but then each to their own and fair play to Paul Larsen for strapping himself into that thing....

I have to say that I would be slightly disappointed if Sailrocket took the record. Every other record holder from Hydroptere to Windsurfers to Kitesurfers have far more in common with typical craft that people use and can buy. They all can be used in conditions that are less than perfect ie. open ocean. The recent windsurfer 50knot record to fall was even done on a production windsurfer.
Sailrocket has just simply applied drag, RM and power theory into a craft that is useless on anything other than a speed course. It is just trying far to hard and therefore slightly unsporting in my book.

I agree, I think sailrocket is actually quite slow considering it really struggles to go much faster than a soft sailed foiling tri.... I also wonder why the AC72s are struggling to go Hydroptere like speeds. Different ball game completely but does make you realise how special that boat is!

The speed sailing world has been populated by boats which are designed to do one thing only for the last 40 years or more. Crossbow, Icarus, Yellow Pages Endeavour (the aussie speed record boat). It is only recently that teatrays with kites have started getting in the way of the true experimenters.
Hydroptere really seems to fill a niche all of its own - an amazing bit of kit. |

Total repsect for anyone who can design and sail a boat that can go 60 Knots. Yes, its elitist (in the sense that it is only good for the race track) but we all love Formula 1 racing and you can't drive their cars on the road.

aye, in the terms of speed sailing, Hydroptere is odd by being so close to a "normal" boat

in reality, it's only 'close' to normal boats in the same way Msr Button's 'weekend' McLaren run-about is the same as my old banger, because it's got four wheels and a combustion engine
