I'd also think that the Rooster 8.1 rig might be worth a look, 30 year old Laser for £350 and the same again for a new 8.1 rig could be a low cost way to achieve a club competitive boat for a 15 stone guy.

Fill the mast step with water to check if it leaks or not!!! Very common problem in old Lasers!

poke around the deck and look for soft spots, and look out for lots of corrosion around gooseneck, mainsheet blocks kiker fittings, its aluminium and stainless steel so you will get corrosion and there isnt much you can do but be aware of it and rinse the boat when you sail.

Good point there. The only issue is that you will probably not be allowed to fleet race with the other Lasers in the club. Not sure on the competitive weight for a solo but the guys I generally see in them tend to be between 14 and 16 stone. Paul |

Thanks for all the replies. It would seem a £350 laser would be a good bet to start out with building up to a full size or even rooster rig. Then, once I move from novice to intermediate look for something else, maybe a Phantom or a Solo.(I could be 58 and 19st by this point So my next question is does any one know where I can buy a decent £350 laser? |

There are a few sub £500 Lasers on the boats and outboards site - sorry Y&Y, love your magazine and have been buying it for 30 years so I hope you don't mind the plug for another site!
It's also worth looking at club noticeboards, as you sometimes see the odd bargain there. |

You may be able to find a boat with a "green" cover at one of your local ponds and make the owner a offer....

or every club has boats that never get used, im sure someone could make it so that you can purchase one of these and get yourself on the water.
