Get twenty members together, charge them a tenner and get a coach in for a day!

There is nothing stopping clubs getting coaches to come in and do some training, with enough takers the fee per person is quite small to get a professional coach in. The RYA provide a couple of days of coaching FOC for Volvo champion clubs, surely this counts as sporting grass roots?

lads i think you missed the point. I said grass roots sailing eg. programme to help with weed. - there are many other examples Your examples also favour grass roots sailing and may well be better. The fact is RYA subscriptions continue to rise but grass roots dinghy sailing, which is how most sailing members of the RYA got into the sport is chronically underinvested and appears to have no strategic direction. Why should the RYA not drive a hard bargain with its sponsors and get them more additional exposure at a lower level. If these medals are so valuable then the wider sport should benefit more. |

Thats a good point tack'ho. I see plenty of race training weekends organised by class associations and run by volunteers, and people seem to take a lot from these events. I'd like to see RYA training weekends which are independant of class or club, open to all levels of sailor, run by RYA coaches and available at a small fee. Wishfull thinking maybe, but i'm sure plenty of sailors would take advantage of such a scheme and it would benefit a broad range of british sailors. |

Now i don't think the RYA have got it exactly right, personally i'd like to see more coaching for amateurs (not just lasers either!) made available to club level sailors. However weed cleaning and the like?? Would Sea sailors get annoyed about cash being spent on something that doesn't concern them! The point is you'll never please everybody but as for the top level funding, I think it's fair to say the results speak for themselves!
