This might sound a real silly question but is there any possibility that the 59er sail has been mixed up with a 29er sail at some point, even before the sails got their class insignia stamped on them? I don't know what the measurements are from off the top of my head but the difference between sail size might be because of this reason. might be worth measuring the old 59er sail against a 29er one if you get the chance. |

Bad day at neil prydes then...maybe a 'friday afternoon' sail.
try laying two sigma 33 mainsails over each other He may be banging on too much rig or halyard tension
good luck with the new sail |

No Ian99, mylar and as see through as any sail I've ever seen, but also rather new looking and certsinly not thrashed. Testing temporarily halted as the mast track has fallen off the mast! |

If the other jib was quite old and had been flogged a lot, it would be quite a different shape to the new one anyway because it had been used. The laminate cloth can shrink as it gets older. Dependent on how the cloth has been laid out, the sail could either end up flatter or just a really horrid shape if the shrinkage is in different directions in each panel!
This is where I look really silly when someone tells me a 59er has a dacron jib ![]() |

As an update to this story. The owner in question has now bought himself a new jib and the difference in shape is quite marked. Its still a flat'ish cut but at least it does have some shape. A demonstration of the fact that strict one design does not mean that everyone has the same equipment!! Ian |

no, but the boat is very light ( vs say RS400) and easily driven. Also off wind it means the main is not overpowering you and is nice and light on sheet load. Anyone who sails an RS400 should jump in a 59er for a test drive and be amazed at the light touch it takes to go faster! reasonable vid', pity about the voice over- http://www.russellsmith.f2s.com/Zoom.rm Edited by damp_freddie |

Thanks guys I'll pass it on. Yes I thought big flat sails instead of small full ones but actually the sails aren't that big.

The flat sails also produce less drag - which is all part of the philosophy of the boat- the hull has a bit more rocker/deadrise and relatively long chines on a relatively narrower immersed hull making it slippier than the 29er/49er. I reckon swiftsolo risks a bit with his upper D2s being slack-alice - but I presume the windward one comes tight when sailing(?)
I think "design wind" for the boat must be about 9 knts (with lard at 150-180kg !) and there after you are depowering the already flat sails! Low and fast is the aim- don't try to point. If you can invest in a dinghy-speedo, or have a GPS, you should be able to do 7/8ths of windspeed upwind in up to 12 knts breeze, and almost up to 1/3rd faster than the wind on the "run". Swifty can tell you more about higher winds, but I just remember bombing down over the wave train wearing a grin and being able to chill out! |

Why?? Thats not going to add any depth to the sail, if anything I would have thought it would make it flatter. Which hole on the jib clew plate is the sheet attached to? Have you tried moving it up to the top so that there isn't so much pull across ways? When i sailed that boat, the jib seemed absolutely fine (in fact it set beautifully) so unless something's been changed since then there isnt actualy anything wrong with it. |

There's a principle being established that larger flat sails are easier to handle than smaller full ones for the same power. Hnece the 59er has relatively large sails for the righting moment etc available, but they flatter.
