Hi im looking for a fun singlehander but not sure which one to pick! Im about 50 - 55kgs, about 5ft 5" (ish). Id like something faster than a topper! Id also like a boat thats stable or easy to right and also something that can be de-powered nicely as where i sail it can pick up in minutes! My price range is about 」1000 - 」2000. Ive been looking at the laser 4.7 and or the Radial but thats it. Something easy to transport aswel would be great because it will probably be taken on holiday. Thanks guys |

Byte C11. Great new carbon rig. Can de-power really well - more than lasers. Hull 45kg, so easy to move/transport etc. I'm slightly heavier than you, 58kg and about the same height. Sailed my byte with new rig for the first time today - can't stop smiling.

Hi runningfree,
How if you do not mind me asking how old are you? Sounds to me like the Byte CII could be a very good option. Currently you would be a bit light for the Radial but this could be a good option for you if you are still growing. If you are young the 4.7 is a great option and a natural feeder to the Radial. The great advantage with the Laser is that there is loads of top quality training available. For example there is some 4.7 only training at Stokes Bay next month which will have 3-4 coaches. Application forms may be found at: http://www.laser.org.uk/docs/uploaded/Stokes_Bay_4.7_only_tr aining.pdf No doubt the Byte CII is a better boat than the Laser but whether it is a better "class" for you really depends on your needs. Best wishes, Jon |

I would strongly suggest since you are 15 you take advance of the RYA Junior and Youth Programmes (in other words sail the 4.7 then the Radial).
If you want to sail a Byte go for it when you are no longer a Youth... Regards the Byte the complete boat is about thirty five hundred and the rig about fourteen hundred. Meaning the boat is about the same as a Laser but the rig is twice as much, seems about fair to me,,,
You will definitely find it a lot easier to pick up a second hand Laser for your price range! Edited by Jon Emmett |

I'd have to agree with Jon. If you want to get some supported trg then the Laser 4.7 route is probably the way foward. But the Byte is a much nicer boats to sail. read the interview with Ovington boats and Ian bruce on the Byte website. You could look at getting a Byte and borrowing a laser for trg/opens If you shop around for a second hand Byte you could look probably get an old rigged boat for between 500-1000 your then looking at the cost of adding a full CII rig. There are a couple od CII boats for sail for just over 2K at the mo but they usually sell pretty quick. It really depends what you want, any other Byte question feel free to PM me. |

Also look at the 'Splash' / 'Flash'. Splash has a rig similar in size to L Radial 5.5sqm Flash is similar to L i.e 7sqm. Association second hand page - clicky Currently several in your price range. These are great little boats that are easy to handle. Here are some links for your interest: www.splashworlds.org www.splashworldwide.org uk splash / flash association Edited by Jack Sparrow |

The Splash/Flash combo does look a good one - they seem to be East coast based - have any made the journey further west? I'd love to have a sail in a Flash, mainly because I hate not having sailed a boat! I take it the age limit wouldn't apply to handicap racing for the Splash, so it would be possible to change between rigs to suit the weather? Or is that frowned upon in the class?

Yeah... sorry, I must keep my eye on the ball! ![]() ![]() But is good to see ( a couple of posts up ) what a byte CII upgrade rig would cost. By the way nothing against Byte's, in fact i went to see one of the very fist in John Caig's garage. Can't remember why I didn't get one back then? |
