Has anyone got any ideas as to what varnish to use, what paint is best to use and what's best for laquering the mast?

Many Thanks George

it is vital that you find out what was used originally and use the appropriate.  do not put 2 pack paint/varnish on top of one pack paint/varnish.  i recently did my carbon mast using 2 pack International Perfection varnish.  Not the cheapest but high quality.  it is important for the carbon spar that the coating has excellent UV protection.

On a boat that's already paintyed/varnished what was used last time is usually the best choice.

I never really trust varnish for UV protection - seen too many furry SMOD masts in the dinghy park. I use paint!

Theres some awesum West epoxy, cant remember which one it was! I used that when I built the scorpion instead of varnish - 3 years down the line havent touched it once and wont need re-doing for a long time (at the moment anyway!)

As for your mast - carbon mast? Sand it down and use car laquer!

There's nothing wrong with varnish for UV protection provided you put enough on. I suspect SMOD masts only get one coat, i'd use two as a minimum, preferably 3 which probably gives equivalent build up to one coat of paint.

Car laquer is perfectly adequate and has the added advantage that it's hard in an hour - in this weather that's a godsend! I've been waiting 3 days to touch up my chipstow!!
