wasnt quite out at the weekend but tuesday was mental at aquasports, we cancelled all the sessions and went windsurfing/pico sailing. had f7 gusts come through and on a tiny lake windsurfing is had cos you have to turn alot. even in a pico the bankl was coming up quite fast.

sailed in the solent this weekend. Monday was interesting, Was reading gusts of 35-40knots did over 10kn with half the genny up Was good but interesting getting back into harbour I must say. Espesh when a RIB decided to park in our spot |

20 miles!!! that's a race for youngsters. Mind you we're thinking of doing the sheppey thing this year.
Wild and wet at Pevensey on Sunday, westerly 4-5 gusting 6 . Slightly off shore so good launching conditions. Quite a few signed on, fewer got on the water. A sailor who shall remain nameless (4th in the junior worlds) forgot his bungs. Exhausting upwind. Downwind legs are over so fast not worth using the spinny. Reaches out to sea and back, bouncing from wave to wave, so much water in my face I thought I might drown. My wife on the wire screaming and laughing like a maniac. A Fantastic day. 3rd and 2nd place.

Our highest gust registered was 32, mind you inland that's quite a bit. Had a great hour or so just reaching across the lake and back, mini 11 year old crew with massive smiles and shrieks, hanging out for dear life, planing with half the boat out the water. Then after a tack, my crew fell over cos the bottom was slippy with laods of wate rin, capsize... boat wouldn't go head to wind and centreboard was making omninous noises. Every time i brought it up it came over agian as it wouldn't go head to wind, one time it came over on my head and forced me underwater.. not pleasant. got help from the rescue boat in the end, all's well that ends well, except another burgee gone...

last weekend there was no wind, sat and sunday i was on the cruiser so that was wasted, today we had 30 knots gusting into the 40s with someone seeing a 50, this on our club anemometer that reads low. anyway i took the kayak (read 2 foot wide, 9 foot long lump of plastic with self draining holes in the bottom) down and mucked about in the surf in the morning, then when the tide came in a bit more i was on safety boat for about half an hour and saw one broken mast and lots of capsizes before everyone decided there was too much wind (4 4.7s went out with fat people in them), safety boat was fun. after this we went pratting around in the kayak and i surfed one wave for about 100 metres. getting 100 metres offshore was a nightmare. so yeh, good day.

The world conspired against me today. Just launched the laser when the mainsheet got under the rudder, a just hit and the rudder was levered out and pintels snapped. So it was windy and wavy and I was rudderless so I drifted quickly into the club ship and bashed around on there for ages until someone got a rope and pulled me in......yep I looked like a right wally!  |

Plenty of breeze at Kielder too - in fact with it going up in the 30 knots we called off the morning racing, but had a go at our Dam to Dam challenge (20 miles) in the afternoon when it dropped down to the lower 20s. It was wild! 16 boats entered, 12 hoisted sails, 9 launched, 6 made it to the far dam, 2 started the 2nd leg up a side leg of the reservoir, 1 finished. Amazingly only 2 retirals through minor breakages, the rest made wise choices. The final two were an Osprey and a Fireball - and the Fireball would have won if the kicker had not gone on the last gybe and he had to be towed in. Our Osprey ride was awesome! We got to the far end first and had a mindblowing run home with the spinnaker flying us and the rib unable to keep up, but the wind had risen again by the time we got to the main dam - according to the clubhouse monitor it was solidly in the 30's - and our 23 stone was not enough in those conditions and we were so tired! So 4 capsizes later in the last mile back towards the clubhouse, we retired. Hats off to all who took part, amazing performances from them all, especially those who kept going - and the speed of an RS Vision with reef and trapeze in those conditions was terrifying! Breakages stopped them or they would have won. I don't get the impression it was aimed at a market that would give it that sort of treatment. |

Plenty of breeze on the Medway this weekend. We had an informal race in the morning whilst waiting for a special event in the afternoon. Pretty much just overpowered all the way. Lovely fast reaches and I think we won. Very nice to see the 4000 can leave the Osprey upwind as well as down - there have been times when the Osprey has been a problem upwind. The afternoon may have been windier - its difficult to tell since it was wind over tide and very choppy in places. The river was also very busy with power boats, cruisers and commercial traffic criss-crossing making life very difficult when on the limit with the kite up. Later I was told the wind was recorded as 18Knots. We capsised to windward when we passed to leeward of a bulk carrier on a tight spinnaker leg. Up until then we only had a couple of 800s in front and had left the Osprey, MPS, 59er and the other 4000s well behind. However when we got going the Osprey, a 4000, a 29er and a 400 were past. It was my fault I'm inclined to get "the red mist" in strong conditions and should have been a bit more conservative. However the next wild kite leg pulled them all into view although it was hairy as the bow went through rather than over quite a few waves. Most of the race had been downwind and so most of the rest was upwind which was worrying since the Osprey was only just behind. We were gaining on the 400 and overtook the 29er after about a kilometre on port tack, however the Osprey was now right up to us and sailing higher. This and some smoother water prompted me to go for speed and it worked as we gradually pulled away but reluctance to tack meant the Osprey, the 400 and ourselves rounded for the next downwind leg together. The Osprey went straight for the next mark (as they do) and the 400 got the angles right so we all arrived at the next mark in a bunch. We had a tricky drop/gybe to get the inside overlap and the others had only to drop and round up. We nearly swam and the others got away, so we had it all to do again. Fortunately the next big leg was long, windy and thus for us very fast. We didn't see the Osprey again and the only view we had of the 400 was as it gracefully rolled in to windward! Going home up the more restricted waters of Gillingham Reach meant flatter water and so we got planning to windward properly again and pulled even further from the Osprey. A great days racing. I guess its only fair to mention that on handicap the Osprey was 7th, we were 8th the 29er 9th, and the 400 10th. Edited by redback |
