You know, the trouble is that there are "organisers" and "non organisers". We "non organisers" are at the mercy of the "organisers" and we dare not complain as we may then be asked to become "organisers" a function not suited to us. I have been sailing at our little club for many years and two of my children have grown up sailing there. At no junior event have I ever been asked to be a "responsible adult" or had anything to do with "organisation". Therefore I am at the mercy of the "organisers" who have now put me in charge of the grass cutting team ! This will disturb my sleep pattern as there will be no long grass to sleep in. What do I do ?

lol sorry about that here are a few pics of our water in the summer you can see the cattle drink walls but couldn't find any of the damcocks but they are stone buit turrets about 3-4ft dia 4-5 foot high with 3ft of steel girder sticking out of the top.  Now bear in mind that we have lost water recently, and  i managed last Sunday to hit both with the dagger board but the water is still quite away above these pics luckily there was hardly any wind or i would have done some serious damage.

See the walls in the back  ground and then imagine that the water is about a foot below the field fence line when full
Those people in the background would be about three feet under water when the lake is full

Dead right, mate. There appears to be a class of people in this world who simply cannot participate in anything - as it is. They are incapable of being without a mission to, as they see it, improve everything. 'Leaving something the same' is never an option for them. All the events they organise are, apparently, 'a fantastic shop-window for the club'!!!! They never seem to grasp that what they seem to want to 'sell', they are ruining in the process.

Depends on your clubs situation really. Is the need for money driving them to act that way?  Perhaps many members enjoy the higher standards of competition that opens bring?   Perhaps your members enjoy actually doing some quality fleet racing, but in any case rather than complaining if you value your sport and your club get on the committee and do something about it.

I didn't want to get too specific, but to answer you, 'LateStarter':- The club in question has never in my memory been in any financial difficulty. I can confidently say that there has never been any lack of top competition. I'm afraid, I don't agree that being unwilling or unable to be a committee member should debar you from commenting on committee policy. The issue I raised is based on my dislike of the preoccupation the committee appear to have with holding more and more events at a club with limited space, which drastically reduce the opportunities for recreational or practice sailing by members such as myself. Dinghy Mag carried an article recently which discussed this same problem. It recognised the need to be mindful of the possible problems caused to members by holding many opens, but I thought it brushed these problems aside too easily.

Of course not, but I think that the more you contribute to a club usually equates to the level of influence you have. Just like life really.

The other factor to cosider is that good Open events are the very best publicity a club can have. If you're having trouble recruiting members that's something to keep well in mind.

16 events does sound a lot ...

We only host 6 events per year to balance the needs of the members with the desire to hold good opens.

We also only hold events for classes that are active in the club.

The odd exception but that's what we do ...

Balance members needs, also running a good event requires members to give their time.

we have 4 opens, (mirror feva topper laser), one big inerclub event and the Triangulation race each year. 16 opens at one club a year does sound like a lot but really can you not borrow a boat, or crew for someone to get out on the water on at least some of these dates?
