Out of the boats you've just listed and considering the weight you're at and
your age, if it were me I'd pick the 29er hands down. The buzz, 500 and 3000 in my opinion don't compare to the 29er. The 4000 at your size you're possibly going to struggle with. Though myself and the person who helmed for me in 4000's were around a similar weight to you guys and I loved sailing the boat. Doug H |

Yes the 29er does look great, but we are still considering strongly the rs 500 and the buzz. Right yes we had an idea we might struggle with a 4000, but we r open to most idea's matt |

i have sailed all 3. i would say the easiest to sail is the 500. Its relatively stable with a simple layout. However i would leave it as i believe there are a few niggles which RS may have to sort out on the older boats. Add that to the fact you wont get one at much under £5000 and its not worth it for a few years yet. Next the buzz. An old design. Heavy mast, very heavy hull. Going upwind you have tonnes of power, make loads of spray but still dont get anywhere fast. Downwind is a similar story, loads of spray, nose high in the air but not much speed. A really dated design which is not that easy to use. However they are nice and cheap and wont break on you readily. Then you have the 29er. Its a racer. simple layout, responsive rig, light hull etc. I would say the 29er is the most rewarding boat to sail if your of a good enough standard to get to grips with it. You can even pick them up for around £2000. The definate best for 'bang for buck'. |

Right, the last post was very helpful, you covered lots of our queries. Rs500 the price and never knew it had some niggles. Buzz did look a little heavy etc and the 29er look great, has a good racing sceane and is surprisingly cheap thanks for the info |

One question about the 29er the sail is it depowerable for coming into a ramp slowly etc or does it need to come in fast and head it to wind ? and is changing the settings diffrent to other boats? matt |

If you're coming into the ramp sailing downwind, you can always drop the
main and come in on the jib. Launching and landing the 29er is going to be trickier than 500 and buzz but between the two of you you'll get the hang of it very very quickly! The settings on the 29er are very very simple, you'd be fine through the wind range just using a middle setting. You should be easily able to get a setup guide from the internet. The 29er circuit is vast majority youth sailors, so if you got to any events you'll be sure to meet some people around your age and make a lot of great friends. |

the 29er is perfectly managable in over 20 knot, my combined crew weight is equal to 140 (Ish) and we are well powered at 20 knots and the boat is handle-able up to 25/27knots and then it gets hairy.. i woudl recommend a 29er... theres a lot on the market at the moment and you dont need a brand new boat to do well at events.

I wonder if those people who say that the 29er is more fun than a 3000 have tried a 3k with the new North sails? For my money a 3k is at least as much fun - more spray for a start! - and much easier to sail, so that you can actually sail with your head out of the boat. We have 29er kids at our club whose boat-handling has been coached way beyond our level, bit we still beat them on the water... At least have a demo in a 3k before you decide. i have never sailed a 3000. However I would EXPECT the 29er would still be more fun simply because its a youth class so they would be racing against similar ages people with events aimed at making their age people enjoy it. How long have the kids at your club had the boat? I suspect if they are as good as you say once they get the hang of it and each other they will beat you over the water and on handicap. The 29er has a very simple rig. Fixed length forestay and shrouds. For different wind strengths you simply move the shroud holes. This is all freely available on the class website. As for coming in, you can either keep the main in tight so its not powered up in the same way or you can drop it. Dropping it and getting it rolled is not that easy the first few times but once you get used to it you'll be fine. If you want any more info on either the 29er or 500 feel free to pm me or anything. They've had their 29ers two whole seasons, racing pretty much every Sunday plus some Wednesdays, 29er opens, Nats etc, and have made huge strides from their early days when they spent most of their time swimming (despite having come from inter alia Laser 3000 and 420). |
