An old Enterprise makes a great family boat and inland you could sail it single-handed. I bought mine 10 years ago for £350 with trailer and trolly and its still going strong. Its not a race winner but superb for mucking about and a bit lighter than a Wayfarer so much easier to handle ashore and when launching. If you want something a bit more racy then go for an old Lark. Not so commodious but cheap and has a spinnaker if you want to experiment. Racier still and old Fireball or a Laser 2, as mentioned above. We're down to two up only now but again some cheap examples around. Don't buy anything made of wood unless you're keen on spending time and money looking after it. You have to join a club though - you don't know what your missing. |

how about something like a laser 2? loads of them about, nice and cheap. with a kite and trapeze you can have a blast as you get better and used to the boat!

Laser 2000 maybe furl the Jib single handed, yet room for 3. Good class assoc and well supported opens if you decide to go that way. |

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

If you can find one, an old Dart 15 would be perfect for you. Can be sailed singlehanded or two up, with or without trapeze. They are roof rackable and are easy to sail. Only issue is they are as rare as hens teeth!

Any suggestion on a suitable boat for me and my family. my sons are 11 and 10 and have been sailing opi's and toppers. I have been sailing toppers and wayfarers. I would say we are intermediate level. We would like something that can be sailed single handed but can also be sailed by 2 (or more!!) We don't want to buy new and have a limited budget. I know I asked this question a while ago, and quite a few of you said to join a club first before deciding what boat to buy, but we're not getting enough time on the water and would like to buy something to take away at weekends. Please help. Edited by bluegeorge |
