Of course, the Cherub sailors here are NEVER one-eyed themselves!

Well, I could, but then I'm not supposed to be a world class sailor evaluating skiffs for the olympics...surely an Olympic skiff is supposed to be tricky to sail, or you may as well use a Topaz?

It puzzled me too: I would be rather suprised if there was anything other than the T foil rudder about either Cherub that was significantly more complicated than the 29erXX.

It might possibly be the hassle of putting the boat on its side to put the sails up, wouldn't bother me but heard bystanders on our local slip comment about how it must be a hassle to put a boat on it's side to put the sails up, probably not realising the weight of the boat itself and the fact it's fairly straight forward. I wouldn't look too much into the "trick" comment as the other comments about the RS being too easy, the 9ers under powered and the 14 too powered would be give me more reason to be worried as someone there representing the classes. In retrospective, I'm suprised that the B14 hasn't put in an appearance at the trials, would have been a good boat to be assessed and possibly a better benchmark than the I14.

The class decided against it.  Not sure how it would have done or what ISAF would make of it, its a more difficult boat to sail than the 800 for sure but it has quirks about it that some sailors might find confusing if they are used to chutes and downhauls on kites.  Interesting to see how quick it would be against the others.   A bit more publicity of the class on the world stage wouldn't have been a bad thing however.

I think the Cherub Daemon has jib and main halyard.

However my Cherub doesn't and I rig her alone. It's so easy : just attach the boat to the trolley, take a shroud and go til the top mast. Put the sails and way back. Moreover it's often a far more stable position when waiting on the shore.

Its amazing how often people new to the class have bought a boat, put halyards on, then taken them off again after their first open meeting:-) With a two handed boat and two or more at the event rigging a 65kg boat on its side is considerably *less* hassle than halyards!

Without a rigging cradle no halyards is a pain in the arse.

The need to have tyres with you or use an old life jacket etc. or find a nice bit of grass or risk shagging your gunwales or chines ( not to mention forgetting to take the foils out of the boat before you turn it over - Doh!), plus a distinctly difficult experience when coming into a tight launch area on a breeze lee shore, like Plymouth Mayflower, especially now the Cherubs are twin string with more canvas.

Although there are distinct performance advantages to no halyards there are defiantly occasions I would of liked them.

Not to mention when sailing the first Cherub I owned (Flying Trifle) with my wife ( then 7.5 stone me 10 stone ) it was decidedly energy sapping for her. And this from a boat meant to be sailed by people this weight.

So I can understand why people put on halyards. If I get a Cherub again it will have halyards of some kind.

edit:

Oh and a trolley!

I've got halyards on my boat but only cause of lack of rigging space at our club plus i can get decent rig tension(for a wooden boat built in 1977) with the highfield lever on the jib halyard. If i put the boat on it's side then everyone else would have to rig on the concrete or harcore tracks, fine in no wind but when it's a bit blowy can be a bit dodgy.
