Sorry but these days Osea is a very swish private "retreat". Five star facilities and a clinic for psychiatric disorders/addictions etc. It'd be out of your range TT. I'm going to stick my head above the parapet again here and just suggest a couple of short articles in todays independent for those (few) still interested in gaining some perspective on all this. Go to independent.co.uk and follow the links to Ann Widdecombe and Austin Mitchells articles. And just before I get shot down in flames again I have noticed that most of the rest of the paper is full of articles about Andrew Mackay etc and even I'm prepared to admit that some of what is coming out is rather depressing.

Funnily enough I just sent this to our politician this morning, not expecting much joy but it made me feel better
I have just read what you have made in claims for the last 5 years on your 2nd! home. Do you not think that it is insulting to your constituents, that you think you can claim for anything you like, without a thought for those that pay all their taxes, but cannot claim anything back to help upkeep their own homes? I have voted for you or your party! ever since I have been able to vote, without fail. I am sorry to say that this latest scandal has destroyed any faith I had in you and your party, not withstanding that the other parties are all as devious as yourself! Do you not think that if you and all other MP's paid back all the money that they have been paid we could get ourselves out of the recession without borrowing any more money? The Telegraph has put down that you claimed nearly £80,000 for your 2nd home, if all of you are claiming this we would be putting £48,400,00 back into the coffers Edited by les5269 |

I wonder if this a turning point in UK politics? Will we look back on this episode in 10 years time and say that was when our politics finally got cleaned up? |

THis is a different problem. Some consultany moves (i.e. bring them into a business) is simply a way to get leverage. Company decides they need some additional assistance on a short term basis so they pay for it (1,000 per day is not much for consultancy!!!!). Yes sometimes they are telling companies what they already know, but this helps spinless management teams then get on with the job. I've been in situations when I/my team have been called in to do some work, and it's obvious thay the company already knows what the problem is and how to fix it; but IF an outside organisation / Firm says it, they can then implement "un-popular" plans by saying "it was the consultancy firm's idea". As for GOrdo calling an election, it's not going to happen unless someting very surprising happens. Who has to call the election? Gordon, is he in deep poo? Yes. Thus he will wait untill the last possible moment. Maybe if some labour MP's decided to call for an election it might not happen, as if there was enough, the oppo can call for a vote of "no confidence" in the govt, this is then voted on, if the govt loose then there is an election. Will Labour MP's vote themselves out of a job?

I think the most classic line from last night was that old chestnut "but the public don't understand...". I think what they don't seem to realise is that we understand all too well. And don't forget that this is actually just the tip of the iceberg. What about all the "under the table" dealings with all their mates in the big consultancy firms that have been charging £1,000+ per day to simply tell us what we already knew. There is un unprecidented amount of public money been spent either unnecessarily or certainly not on a "stricly arms-length" basis. It would be interesting as a next project for the Telegraph to look into insider dealing (i.e. where an minister just happens to be either on the boad of, an advisor to, or a friend of the Chairman, of the the company that got the job). I think the scale of this would surprise a few people. Just think about the NHS computer sysem debarcle. After billions of pounds spent it still didn't work. The Minister in charge claimed that she "didn't understand about Project Management", but it then turns ou that before she was an MP, she worked at said firm at senior management level ! When it comes to sacking or supending them, that's where we (the public) come in. If they're not sacked, then the public in that constituancy will not vote for them anyway, and so not only will they lose their job, but the party loses a seat also (which will serve the party right for not sacking them and replacing them with somone honest). So if people vote with their consience at the next GE, then the scum will be gone anyway. Just a shame we have to wait so long. Rant over, sorry. |

2 full time jobs (sic).... and many of them still have the time to get their fingers in other pies... directors of this and that company, advisors etc. etc. But of course they always declare their other interests.... I think that the SISO is used for the Euro MP's, not that they are any better. The whole idea from GB to have yet another body/committee to look into this will only mean more expense for the taxpayer, and no doubt cover ups. The best (and cheapest) auditers by far are the general public. Only by absolute transparency, publishing all expenses, will these obscene excesses be curbed. And when was a food bill a legitimate expense, surely they have got to eat wherever they are? Give them £1,500 p.a. 'London weighting', taxable like everyone else! Bull*%£$! |

There is a very real possibility that Labour will not have control of one single council after the local elections (they only have 4 at present). That surely would increase pressure for a General Election. |
