A backbench MPs job is not full time - otherwise how could they fit in second jobs like so many of them do? Or take up a cabinet post? Second home allowance is only one part of the scam. Nepotism, £250 unreceipted allowance, cash-for-questions, hypocrisy, deceiptful behaviour. Take a look at this list and see what your MP claimed last year. Note that the second home allowance was not claimed at all by some (a very few) MPs, and other allowances vary just as much. £20k for "communications" expenses. Chat lines don't cost that much... |

Simple soulution I have advocated for a long time. Exec halls of residence close to the commons. No second home allowance.
OR, second home allowance and the govt holds the freehold and so you cannot rpofit from the sale of the house aws the MP does not own it. |

I've never understood how they are given a second home allowance to BUY a second home. Fair enough pay for a hotel room, fair enough pay for them to rent a small flat if it's cheaper than a hotel, but why are they able to claim money in order to buy, improve and furnish an appreciating asset? And how the guy with who claimed for an already redeemed mortgage is not up on a fraud charge is beyond me. You can be imprisoned for tax evasion (not paying enough to the treasury) but not for taking too much from the treasury! |

I suspect its probably fairly easy for the rich to forget that sort of thing: one's accountant back in the consituency pays the mortgage and one's parlimentiary secretary handles the expenses claims. If the one doesn't contact the other - well there you are... I mean, its not as if one would want to get one's hands dirty reading the accounts oneself is it. Edited by JimC |

It was interesting how the Newspaper editor got an ovation after the opening round but by the end he was being heckled more than the politicians!
To be honest I thought Theresa May and Ming the merciless came across quite well and made some worhty comments and suggestions on improvements to the system, but Margeret Beckett!!!! I would ask "what was she thinking" but the answer is clearly "not a lot!". |

I've avoided this thread so far simply because I am so very angry.
I was going to justify my boat with it's ability to "swing the poll" and set it down as a legitimate expense, indeed in real life I struggle to put it through the business and we're in that sort of trade. The fact is where I am currently, which is a business struggling for survival with a staff that have had to take a pay cut, having to have made almost a 40% cut in staff, whilst still collecting the VAT, Tax & N.I. that supports these vermin, frankly I am incandescent with rage. They and the Bankers they have emulated seem to have absolutely no moral compass whatsoever it is absolutely outrageous what is going on in the private sector. The very private sector that generates the wealth and income to support the public sector excesses of which this is just another sordid example. I'm minded to write to the Queen and suggest Parliament is dissolved, a caretaker coalition government formed from the few 'straight' Politicians if they can be found from all Parties who have not been 'working' the system. This is such a tragedy, Britain was supposed to be the mother of democracy, but here we all are virtually helpless to intervene an entire nation deprived of trust in its elected representatives. It really is a very serious problem. |
