You'll spend more on insurance than a car if you take
these suggestions. I got stung for almost £1100 on a 10 year old 1L Micra. Best quote I could find as a named driver with Direct Line. It's towed a big box trailer with loads of gear in the boot to Rutland at back from North London at legal towing speed (maybe more at times ![]() You're better off buying a little cheap car that does the job and spending you saved cash on a room for the night. Maybe a newer Volvo Estate? Have a look at the V40 or V50, and leave some money to cover the insurance .. Should be able to get a V40 for around £2000 for a nicer one that hasnt been too badly abused, and they take anything you can throw at them.
Might not be as economical as some, but they last absolutely forever, have tonnes of room for kit and sleeping in the back, and can tow .. well .. about 4 x more than your licence will allow you to legally!! (750kg MAM (UNbraked) ) Deisil for those days when people won't get off your tail .. one quick downshift and a facefull of smoke usually makes them back off. You want to make sure you always tow with the undercover on though ... (im sure you do anyway!) Easiest thing to do as well is look on Autotrader .. Just throw in your postcode, body type (Estate or Hatch), Fuel type, and hit go! Narrow it down to something you like the look of .. get a test drive (Always important! Make sure you like driving it .. Don't wanna spend all that money and then NOT like it!) My 1.6 Astra Hatch (1999 / T reg) happily tows the Vareo, and would tow a double trailer if I loaded it right. (And kept it within the cars limits of course .. !! ) Oh, and its a lovely shade of Red! (Its faster, don't ya know? ![]() |

I maybe wrongly assuming that you are a guy. My first car was a 306
1.4, it cost double for my brother to be insured on it, based on everything the
same apart from the obvious.
Anyways, mark 3 golfs 1.9 tdi, 306 1.8 tdi etc. 10 years + car and diesel. Hopefully, it will be cheap[er] on insurance and cheap to run. 100,000 miles is nothing for a decent diesel car and they have torque. Edited by Fans1024 |

£5500 is more then enough money to spend on a decent vehicle and insurance. I would recommend an Astra or focus estate. Also you could do worse then a Citroen Xsara Enterprise Van, it looks/drives like a car but has the space of a van its also DIRT cheap and the diesel Hdi engine is a corker. Good luck and if you need any more advice just pop a post, i have been in the motor trade for the last 8 years.

I have a Renault Kangoo van. 1.9 diesel. Pulls a Flying Dutchman with all the gear fairly easily, don't expect to do steep hills at full whack and you'll be fine. A bit noisy when doing motorway speeds possibly, but the ipod has a volume controll. In the back is all the space for sailing kit, tool boxes, rope bags and all the other ancillary bits needed.(Quite alot on an FD) Plus enough room to sleep in the back of very comfortably. Van has the advantage of being a bit more closed off to the world than an estate car so you don't necessarily get woken by the first light at 4:30am. Downside is as had ben mentioned above is that the insurance is a bit more. Also you only have two seats so you won't be able to give lifts back from the pub. Someone else has to do designated driver bit. (I got over that disapointment pretty quickly.) Consider going for a vehicle a bit under your top budget and putting the remainder in a completely seperate "unexpected breakdown" account. Breakdowns always cost more than you think and come after you have just invested a fair chunk of money in sometrhing else. (This is what I would do if I had my time again.)

to be honest dude dont look at anything more than a 1.7 they will kill you on insurance, but astra, skoda fabia estate, 206 estate. in 1.7's are good and cheep as is the focus estate (old stylee) none are that exciteing but all good reliable cars and cheep to insure anythig like a mondeo will be at least 2.5k to insure |

It needs to be a diesel estate or hatch. Don't go for a big engine, something like 2.0l will be fine. They have loads of torque which is ideal for towing, and they'll do 40mpg+. You could do worse than something like a Mondeo, Peugeot 406, or Vectra. Keep away from the German stuff, it costs too much to get serviced and repaired. |

My brother paid £1500 quid on his 1.9 golf and was quoted twice that for an audi 100 2.5 tdi and that was cheap insurance, although he was the named driver. Just having the Van equivilant of a car can up the insurance a lot for a new driver. I would recomend going for estate cars rather than van's. The astra estate comes in a 1.7tdi as well which will do all of your towing type things, its pretty eco and has a shed load of space. One of the guys at the 600 nats slept in one. Otherwise a landi 110 is few of the things listed above, but does have oooodles of space and will tow virtually anything and you can defo sleep in the back as i did with my crew at the cherub nats in weymouth. However they are noisy and not for the long limbed..... happy hunting. |

Audi A6 Diesel - a big car, loads of space, very good for towing and amazingly economical considering its size. Mine has knocked up 210,000 miles and is still going strong (touch wood).
Take a look on Autotrader - you can pick up a relatively new car for peanuts (+£5000). Not sure about the insurance aged 18, but the 1.9 diesel shouldn't be too bad. |

I find an Astravan to be a useful sailor's vehicle.
