My wetsuit is a premium product and does have plain, unlined panels, but they're only on the body part, not below the waist. As I mentioned above, my top is warm enough, but everything below my waist - quite an area for heat loss - feels cold! I've not seen much unlined area below the waist of any summer dinghy wetsuits I've seen, Gill included, presumably because of the risk of tearing unprotected neoprene. So the requirement remains for a water-repellent nylon outer lining. |

You are quite right about the heat loss due to evaporation. The Gill wetsuits which are all Dinghy specific, feature a panel made from C-Mesh on the front and back. This is basically a neoprene finish rather than a nylon one which drastically improves heat loss due to evaporation. We also feature other dinghy friendly features such as Di-Guard abrasion resitant neoprene on the seat and knee area, and X4 Flex stretch neoprene under the arms and back of knees.
As i have mentioend before i do have a vested interest, but did think the evaporation point worth a mention Nick Gill Edited by Mark Jardine |

At last a sensible suggestion, and it's from a Wilsonian member! The Nikwax looks very much like the stuff I tried, but the Barbour wax might be thicker and more repellent. Thanks Matt, I'll look out for it. |

Not read through it all, but isn't the primary reason for sailing wetsuits being double-lined durability? Smoothskin neoprene nicks so, so much easier, and by crikey we don't half cover our boats in things that even skin tight clothing can catch on, in a way that windsurfers and surfers tend not to... It's a matter of balancing warmth versus the suits lasting.

MM Barbour used to make a spray on wax for their waxed cotton clothing that was quite light weight and might be suitable, I would think it is silicone free so shouldn't be as slippery as the Gore-Tex proofing you tried. I have no idea if they still make it. Maybe this stuff is worth a try? http://www.countryattire.com/products/nikwax-cotton-proof-wa shin-waterproofing-300ml.html Alternatively you could just put some trousers on over your wetsuit when having lunch and I wouldn't worry about not looking cool - everyone at WSC knows you're way cool! |

Well if it's a looking cool issue then the final option is MTFU and deal with the cold....

Spray suit trousers over a wetsuit are movement-restrictive; they also add to the rinsing, lugging-home, drying burden. But mostly they aren't cool. I'm still waiting for someone to provide a link to the Fabsil thread, so that I can ask if it works on a wetsuit... |

I agree, batteries are an issue in both production and disposal.
I wonder if it's worth looking at the cold weather surfing wetsuits, they seem to be a league ahead of what the dinghy chandleries stock. Bearing in mind these guys spend a lot of time submerged, only the most effective wetsuits will do. Googling some surf websites might yield some info and potential good buys. Edited by Doug.H |

Like, it needs batteries to provide the heat energy? I provide plenty of heat energy myself, it just needs keeping inside the wetsuit rather than being evaporated away with the water soaked into the outer nylon lining |
