my dad mastered the art of taking out the dagger board in our mirror on a run, taking a waz down the slot and then putting the board back in in time for the leeward mark. i reckon we were at our fastest in those moments!

A quick dip over the side between Nationals races when out at sea fine, but it does need to be wet. Rots the stitching, mind! As for wind chill, why not just wear a spray top? And hightop trousers if colder weather? Not cool, OK, but simple and it works. |

I must apologise tony as I'm unaware of your environmental principles? My
memory is notoriously bad? What could be wrong with that wetsuit apart from the outrageous pricetag? If anyone else is interested in this heated wetsuit here's the link - http://www.ripcurl.eu/index.php?hbomb |

Like, it needs batteries to provide the heat energy? I provide plenty of heat energy myself, it just needs keeping inside the wetsuit rather than being evaporated away with the water soaked into the outer nylon lining |

I agree, batteries are an issue in both production and disposal.
I wonder if it's worth looking at the cold weather surfing wetsuits, they seem to be a league ahead of what the dinghy chandleries stock. Bearing in mind these guys spend a lot of time submerged, only the most effective wetsuits will do. Googling some surf websites might yield some info and potential good buys. Edited by Doug.H |

Spray suit trousers over a wetsuit are movement-restrictive; they also add to the rinsing, lugging-home, drying burden. But mostly they aren't cool. I'm still waiting for someone to provide a link to the Fabsil thread, so that I can ask if it works on a wetsuit... |

Well if it's a looking cool issue then the final option is MTFU and deal with the cold....

MM Barbour used to make a spray on wax for their waxed cotton clothing that was quite light weight and might be suitable, I would think it is silicone free so shouldn't be as slippery as the Gore-Tex proofing you tried. I have no idea if they still make it. Maybe this stuff is worth a try? http://www.countryattire.com/products/nikwax-cotton-proof-wa shin-waterproofing-300ml.html Alternatively you could just put some trousers on over your wetsuit when having lunch and I wouldn't worry about not looking cool - everyone at WSC knows you're way cool! |

Not read through it all, but isn't the primary reason for sailing wetsuits being double-lined durability? Smoothskin neoprene nicks so, so much easier, and by crikey we don't half cover our boats in things that even skin tight clothing can catch on, in a way that windsurfers and surfers tend not to... It's a matter of balancing warmth versus the suits lasting.
