Jim C, the car analogy is a red herring. All aspects of car design have improved in absolute terms since the D-Type was or original Morgan were designed, just as indeed the build technology of 505 hulls has kept pace. But you are really talking about fluid dynamic aspects

While car aerodynamics have improved in absolute terms, hull shape is much more a question of choice of compromise. Whereas the D-Type probably had lots of detached flow and could be improved on in absolute terms, most hull designs, and certainly the 505's, work without significant flow detachment and cannot be improved in the same way.

So it's merely a question of choosing which characterisitics you require. For example, between early, fast planing, wetted area, waterline length, inherent stability and sea-keeping. Modern designs tend to choose to sacrifice light airs performance and wetted area for improved planing, but anyone who has tried to race an RS800 in light airs on handicap will know what a loser that is, just as anyone who has pitchpoled a flat-rockered boat like a 49'er will recognise the compromises that have been made to sea-keeping. On the other hand, you only have to watch the video I posted above to see how well the 505 hull copes with heavy weather and waves.

So I can't agree the 5oh hull is out of date or superceded. It just may or may not suit the style of sailing you want to do right now. You may wish to go fast on flat water in planing conditions; others might well prefer to sacrifice some planing performance for better light airs and seaway performance.

Sailnick could not have imagined his innocent request would generate such controversy, especially since he received his answer within 3 hits!

Regarding reference to fleet racing, I'm sure Sailnick is aware that there is regretfully little  club class fleet racing in the UK. It is usually handicap. There are exceptions such as clubs like Waldringfield SC which races 6 classes. However, if the friendly reception we received from the 505 crowd at the Alton Water Frostbite series is anything to go by then I'm sure small 505 fleets anywhere would welcome the Alto. Afterall Club racing should be fun leaving the serious stuff for the professionals.

Regarding all those uncompetitive 505 wrecks in the USA, and here for that matter, as a previous hit suggested, what a recycling oportunity to convert them into a great boat for fun sailing,

Oh dear, what have I just read in a todays new topic! "49ers to increase sail area". Why modify an old classic?

What's the point of the Alto?

Well, as a Byte sailor now in the San Fransico Bay area, I have had the
privilage of sailing in the Alto. I remember many years ago managing a
505 badly. I'm one of the smaller people and as I have aged have less
strength than in my youth! I find that very frustrating, so when Mike
offered me the rides I have had in the various Alto's, I have been able to
easily manage whichever end of the boat he has put me in. What a
wonderful thing to be out in a fabulous boat reaching and running up and
down the river using the swinging, wing wang pole. Beating is not hard
work and now there is a trapeze to go with even more fun to be had!

It doesn't matter your size, sex or age. The Alto is a wonderfully
manageable boat with enough challenges to keep it interesting.
That capsize on the mud up the Deben was an added excitement!!

Try out the boat before you try to knock it out of the water!!

[QUOTE (i.e. a cut down main)]

Only the head board  of an existing 505 mainsail is modified, thus mainsail area little changed.  the jib is reduced by 1.5m2 in order to self tack. A new mainsail is of higher aspect ratio but same area. It has more roach and is shorter on the boom.

Perhaps Oldarn would be the best person to anwser your questions but when I sailed, there was no trap on the Alto. In the winter series at Olton there was!
